How Did Christopher Columbus First Encounter With Native Americans

The “encounter” between Europeans, and Native Americans in my opinion can be described as a period of contact between many groups, because although some groups were conquered not all were in their first encounter with each other. Supporting my argument is the late 1440’s battle between the Portuguese and the West Africans, as the Portuguese sailed along the coast they find a village where “its’ inhabitants issued forth like men who showed they had a will to defend their houses”.1 These West African men were ready for contact, and when one of their own was killed by a Portuguesian , they responded by injuring the man who killed their own. Columbus assures the king of no conflict, and says “I gave gratuitously a thousand useful things that I carried, in order that they may conceive affection, and furthermore be made Christians; for they are inclined to the love and service of their highnesses and of all the Castilian nation, and they strive to combine in giving us things which they have in abundance, and of which we are in need”.3 This piece of evidence gives us reason to believe that there was no conflict between Columbus, and the Native people he met, but that there was a sense of good will among the two groups. Columbus writes on to say “Christendom should take gladness therein and make great festivals, and give solemn thanks to the Holy Trinity for the great exaltation they shall have by the conversion of so many peoples to our holy faith; and next for the temporal benefit which will bring hither refreshment and profit, not only to Spain, but to all Christians”.4 This last piece of evidence that Columbus wrote reassures us that he had no ill will towards the Native People, nor did they have towards the Spaniards, and also it testifies that although he knew the promises of the land, he was more concerned in the conversion of the Native
