May 24, 2011 Burden on Society To Lucille Roybal-Allard, As a grape picker and mother of two children living in California, I encounter intricate problems every single day. Grape picking is a migrant job with a minimum wage as my salary. Furthermore, I cannot build a home because I have absolutely no guarantee that I will have my job tomorrow or the day after that. As FDA regulations pile up on me; it’s getting harder to sell grapes especially for alcohol uses. My problems don’t stop here. My children don’t go to school because they have to work with me. However, if there is one simple solution to all of these problems, it’s a reform for my children – for my family. The students advocate the issues throughout the country as well as Congress by using many of the grassroots activism strategies including writing to their Congressperson. The National Student Campaign against Hunger and Homelessness is also partnered up with the National Coalition of the Homeless. National Coalition of the Homeless is an organization that is committed to solving homelessness in America by advocating for public policy. Bring America Home Act is a proposed legislation by the National Coalition of Homeless. The Act will seek to end homelessness in United States. The legislation would include housing, economic, and health security provisions. This is the most comprehensive proposal up to date. As a grape picker, I was among the people overwhelmed by poverty. TANF did not provide the job training needed and after the 60 months were over, I was left like many other recipients to just deal with my problems. This caused people like me to depart the public assistance program after the 60 months and obtain a latent job and was thus burdened by poverty even more. Furthermore, TANF undermines many aspects that were taken very seriously by AFDC such as financial assistance to needy families because that was the main focus of AFDC. Since TANF is a block grant and the states are reluctant to spend more, the benefit of TANF like adoption can take away from the main focus for some people which is the financial
