A hero is "a man flying around in a cape and tights saving citizens". That right there is how most people portray a hero in their minds. Movies and books also create a surreal image of a big muscular guy fighting against villains and monsters in Town Hall. In reality, the possibility that heroes fit that description is highly unlikely. A hero is anyone who is dedicated, selfless, and doesn't give up. To be a hero, looks aren't the priority. Having the appropriate characteristics is what really matters. Heroes are dedicated. Dedication is trying as best as possible, even if obstacles pop up. For example, in Moco Limping, the dog has a weak leg but doesn't let it stop him. "He chases lethargic bees and butterflies" and "he jumps at his owner with his feeble paws". Moco is well aware of the disability being faced, yet still tries to do things any other dog would. Similar to dedication is determination. In Mulan, the main character (Mulan) wants to take the father's place in the army but is denied the ability because of gender. However Mulan uses determination to make herself look like a boy and goes out to face the challenges of the army. Heroes are also selfless, meaning the needs of others will go first. For example, in Love Triumphs, a little boy named Deamonte leads five younger children out of the dangerous hurricane-destructed environment and into safety. Deamonte was only six years old at the time, yet still able to acted extremely courageously. Also, in Odyssey, Odysseus and a group of men were trapped in a cave with a giant Cyclops. Odysseus made a plan that allowed one man to escape. He then fought off the Cyclops so the rest of the group could escape as well. In both stories, the main characters (Deamonte and Odysseus) displayed heroic qualities by saving other people first. Heroism can also mean not giving up. In October Sky, Homer had a dream of winning
