I most relate to the biopsychosocial model. I believe that a person’s faith and the power of prayer can affect their health, physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. I also belief that a person has a choice in their health and nature can play a huge impact on a person’s overall wellbeing. Over my years of nursing, I have incorporated different holistic practices into my treatment plans including acupuncture, yoga, massage, meditation, and prayer. I talk to my patients and their families about balanced diets, physical activities, fresh air, and having close personal relationships are in regards to health and balance.
Herbal teas also have the ability to suppress illness as they assist with sore muscles, stomach flu, and a cold. Complementary medicine refers to CAM usage in conjunction with conventional medicine. An example of complementary medicine is the usage of acupuncture in addition to usual care to help assist with decreasing pain, herbal medicine, massage, support groups, as well as yoga (NCCAM, 2011).
Each of these principles directly relates to the need for a naturopath to collect in-depth information from patients in the initial consultation. The role of a naturopath is to support each patient in their journey toward better health by identifying obstacles to recovery and removing any disturbing factors to allow the Vis Medicatrix Naturae to restore vitalism. The more information gathered in the initial consultation the easier it is to identify the possible underlying causes of a patient’s ill health. This enables the naturopath to make the correct recommendations for healthier lifestyle habits to give the body the right environment and conditions to restore homeostasis. The principle Primum Non Nocere teaches the use of the least invasive methods necessary to allow the body to heal itself.
Combined with conventional medicine you then have complementary or intergraded practices. The assortment of health care treatments that are used outside of the realm of what is considered conventional is the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Alternative medicines are used and practiced to nurse and restore health to individuals that are suffering from different illnesses. Many individual benefit from alternative medicines everyday because the have opened their mind and body to the experiences and possibilities that the treatments
A licensed massage therapist will lightly stroke and/or knead the painful muscles. This may increase blood flow and bring warmth to a stressed area. Because arthritis stressed joints are so sensitive, the therapist must be familiar with the problems of the disease. Some benefits that can be achieved by using massage therapy as a treatment for OA are: decreased pain and increased mobility; increased blood flow to areas of arthritis, bringing oxygen to help healing; flushing out of toxic inflammatory substance that can add to pain and swelling; and increased relaxation and a sense of well-being. The types of massage that can help to reduce pain and swelling with OA are: trigger point, reiki, shiatsu, swedish, and reflexology.
This article is about the rebirth of acceptance to the Native American traditions and interest in their healing techniques. It has a list of herbs that were used for all sorts of health related issues. Some of these were as simple as a cough for a child; others are to help a deep open gash that in our world now needs stitches. I find it insightful to see what herbs were used and not only herbs but also other plants, bark from trees, and prayer. The article is written by Lauren Johnston, a doctor who studied different religions and the relation to medicine in that religion.
Health Care Provider and Faith Diversity Caroline Uchehara Grand Canyon University HLT 310 V August 21, 2011 Faith Diversity Spirituality is the foundation of holistic practice in nursing. Spirituality has evolved beyond religious considerations to incorporate multidimensional and existential perspectives that are integral to maintaining the patients’ well-being. A deeper understanding of spirituality enhances the potential for nurses to identify spiritual needs and incorporate spiritual caring into practice. Spirituality and the perception of disease are inter-related;religious beliefs may act as coping mechanisms. Due to the nature of profession, nurses provide care to patients of diverse faith.
My research study was to determine whether daily videotelephone or regular telephone reminders would increase the quantity of prescribed cardiac medication taken in a sample of elderly individuals who have congestive heart failure (CHF) (Peteva, 2001). Within this research I would disseminate the new scientific knowledge with the help of the pharmaceutical company that makes the congestive heart failure medication. With the help and support of the pharmaceutical maker, I would provide a full in-service to the nursing staff of hospitals and doctor’s offices alike. In doing this, this would provide a friendly and educational atmosphere in a nursing practice setting to get complete understanding of the research findings and how they as nurses can make a difference in the consumption of prescribed medication. Secondly, I would write a journal article and have it published in the pharmaceutical’s bulletin to include a well-known nursing journal.
