‘There is substantial evidence, from different countries of different sizes and different regions, that as countries ‘globalise’ their citizens experience benefits’ (Fig 5.1) Discuss this view of the IMF and justify your conclusion. Globalisation is the increased economic integration and interdependency of world economies. It has been a relevant process for the last few centuries but has become more apparent since 1970’s. It’s come about by the huge increase in global trade, low transport costs, higher levels of transfer of communication/information and technology, increased transfer of capital stocks, higher standards of living and the creation of more trading blocs. As globalisation takes place there are different benefits experienced by developing nations and developed nations. The citizens of developing nations encounter more job opportunities due to multi national corporations (MNC’s) operating in their countries. MNC’s have the ability to move to countries with low unit labour costs to pursue higher comparative advantages. These countries are usually LEDC’s. The MNC’s provide lots of jobs in production factories. This improves people's quality of life as they can earn higher disposable incomes. Higher real income means they can spend more money on food and clothes etc. This reduces the majority of citizens living in poverty. According to IMF the amount of people living in extreme poverty (defined as people living on less than $1 per day has halved since the onset of globalisation). This shows how developing populations are benefiting from globalisation. However, the lack of legislation in these developing nations mean MNC’s can exploit the labour and set very low wage rates. Some believe this is unethical although some disagree and say that the people of the developing world wouldn't take the jobs if they didn't want to i.e. if the wage rate was
