Throughout the book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot, it was evident that Deborah Lacks was curious to find out what happened to her mother, Henrietta, and her sister, Elsie. For her mother, she wanted to find out how she died and what happened to the HeLa cells. For her sister, Deborah wanted to know how she died and what kind of life she had at Crownsville. These questions concerning Elsie and Henrietta took such a toll on Deborah that she became physically ill and suffered extreme stress. In order to find out what happened to her sister Elsie, Deborah and Rebecca went to visit Crownsville where Elsie was staying before she died.
The main character, Meg, found a diary of a dead classmate in her coat pocket and on one of the first pages, she reads “and their doom comes swiftly” (McNeil, 139). Another example is “Does he know how I feel? How much it hurts” (McNeil, 210). About a chapter before Meg and T.J. read that diary entry, their friend Nathan was found hanging from a door with an arrow in his chest going straight through his heart. 2.
Hester was then forced to wear an “A” on her clothes which stood for Adultery. Easy A had a much different twist than the real scarlet letter though. High school student, Olive Penderghast, was not well known around school. In fact, she was socially alienated. When her best friend asked her what she had done that weekend, Olive quick came up with a lie to make her life sound more interesting.
Many novels in this genre tackle personal issues such as dating, relationships, weight issues, life issues and many more. Often told from a point of view that pulls the audience in as if the narrator is confiding in them, Chick Lit novels offer something to identify with, and a great percentage of the audience take comfort from this. I love the odd book to read that’s light and funny and easy going and I am one hundred per cent a sucker for a happy ending; everything that is beheld in a Chick Lit novel, but can we call it literature and is it really any good when compared to Authors such as Stephen King and
moment. I like how the author stated that a certain abnormality may be just that- a certain abnormality. But, apply that abnormality to a character, especially in literature, and you get a unique hero/heroine who'll make an amazing impact on the story. I also found it ironic how characters of stories with abnormalties are discriminated against in the story, yet they end up being the hero/heroine of the story. Also, in the real world, we'd feel sorry for these people, sympathize, or even evade them, viewing them as different, and maybe even discriminate against them (meaniieeess!).
She also, obeyed her mother’s request, to bounce whenever she was bullied. To bounce means to ignore and pretend it wasn’t even there. Evyn kept to herself a lot. She never told or showed people how miserable she felt about moving. When Evyn first saw Eleni, with her red lipstick, black pants, and high heels, she thought Eleni looked nothing like a college professor and a mother.
Mystery Book Project The mystery book I chose to read is called “Chasing Brooklyn” by “Lisa Schroeder”. I chose this book because when I had read the back of It, I couldn’t wait to solve the mystery of how the main character “Brooklyn” could try to solve how her boyfriend “Lucca” died. This story was about a young girl, who was about 16 years old. Her brother died, and nobody knows how. Then a couple of years later, her boyfriend Lucca died, and nobody knows how!
The story starts with the del Valle family, focusing upon the youngest and the oldest daughters of the family, Clara and Rosa. The youngest daughter, Clara del Valle, has paranormal powers and keeps a detailed diary of her life. Using her powers, Clara predicts a death in the family. Shortly after this, Clara's green-haired sister, Rosa the Beautiful, is accidentally killed by poison intended for her father who is running for the Senate. The young Clara stumbles upon her sister's autopsy and afterwards, terrified, stops speaking, believing her premonition had caused her sister's death.
Lucy’s idea of beauty is external, her mothers internal. This contrast leads to a lack of communication about Lucy’s changing physique and leaves Lucy on her own to form an opinion of what a woman is, what she should look like, and how she finds love. Lucy’s mother never discusses the disease with her, or what changes she will see in her body. Lucy is not comfortable asking her mother for help because she knows that her mother “never recognized that her anger scared all of us into retreat. By churning problems through her own personal mill, she kept us from ever discussing a problem outright,
Secondly, Kath has a selfish characteristic where she tends to change things so that things seem more suitable for her. Kath thought she was the queen of the school and acted very selfish. Kath’s selfishness is shown towards her interaction with her brother. Kath has a twin brother, Kevin, whom she never hangs out with and did not want to be seen with. In school, there was a girl named Christine who Kath made fun of just once, specifically about her ears.
