To begin, here is some background on the gangs that will be discussed. One gang that has grown rapidly throughout the years in New Jersey is the Bloods. The Bloods are an African-American gang that started in Los Angeles, California. The primary reason why the Bloods are so huge and notorious today is because they wanted to compete against the intimidation and rivalry of the Crips. It all started when the Pirus, a set underneath the Crips, separated during an internal gang war.

The Deprivation Freed Blacks Faced In between the years 1820-1860, political, economic and social changes were occurring in America. Free African Americans continued to expand throughout different cities and states. In fact “in the year of 1820, there were 233,504 freed African Americans living in the United States in which free blacks were accounted for only 2.4 percent of the American population.” (Clark-Hine, C-Hine, and Harrold). However, by the year of 1860 the percentage of free African Americans rapidly increased in many cities such as Baltimore, Philadelphia and Richmond. Because of the expansion of free African Americans, many white people feared the thought of competing with another races.
There are many layers to the Five Points are colored by the groups and individuals that struggled to survive and establish their place in the changing scope of New York. As author Tyler Anbinder points out in his book Five Points, the area’s history has been exaggerated to a large extent due to many focusing solely on the reports found in the press (2001, p. 3). The population that made up the Five Points in the early 1800’s sported immigrants, who made up a quarter of the inhabitants, while approximately fifteen percent was African-American. These individuals worked in a variety of trades, such as woodworking, stone masons and tailors while the larger portion did manual labor jobs. Some of the more prominent tradesmen owned their owned stores or shops (Anbinder, 2001, p. 15-16).
Boston (pronounced /ˈbɔstən/ ( listen)) is the capital of and largest city in Massachusetts,[11] and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The largest city in New England, Boston is regarded as the unofficial "Capital of New England" for its economic and cultural impact on the entire New England region. [12] The city proper, covering just 48.43 square miles, had a population of 617,594 according to the 2010 U.S. Census. [6] Boston is also the anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, home to 4.5 million people and the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the country.
These sets forming together resulted in a rivalry that stretched to higher-up affiliations between the rival gang alliances People Nation (Blood affiliation) and Folk Nation (Crip affiliation) which started in the Chicago area but has spread all over the United States. There are estimated to be up to 20,000 Blood members and Blood gang activity has been reported in 123 cities and 33 states. Although the gang was initially formed as protection against the higher numbered Crip gang, the Bloods objectives are similar to other street gangs such as obtaining capital and control over territory against enemies, and will act violently to secure it. The problem we face with street gangs such as the Bloods is the increase in numbers and the spread to rural/upcoming areas. The criminal activity tied to these gangs bring negative effects to places that may not have seen gang activity previously, such as more crime and poverty, drug abuse, illegal immigrants, etc.
Throughout American history from the early 20th century onward, organized crime has always been relevant and continues to grow as an empire in modern day society. Some of the most popular organized crime groups in America are the Italian Mafia or El Cosa Nostra, the Irish and Jewish mobs, and the South American and Mexican drug cartels which evolved later in the 20th century. Organized crime began with the massive European immigration to the East coast of the United States particularly in New York City. There were more people than jobs so young men had to turn to crime. After, organized crime grew quickly in the 1920’s during prohibition through the smuggling of liquor and separate crime organizations worked together in order to have more control over the law.
Gangs The past 15 years have witnessed a dramatic resurgence in youth gang activity in the United States. One of several types of gangs (others include prison gangs, motorcycle gangs, hate groups, ideological gangs, and adult street gangs), youth gangs are not new to the American landscape. Modern youth gangs, however, are more dangerous than their historical counterparts because of the growing drug economy, the decreasing availability of legitimate employment opportunities in urban areas, increased mobility due to the availability of automobiles, and greater access to more lethal weapons. Moreover, gangs are no longer limited to densely populated urban areas but have an increasing presence in suburbs, small cities, and rural towns. WHAT IS A GANG?
Murders by firearm rates are 17.5 times higher than in twenty-two other populous high-income nations combined. The United States is one of the most violent nations in the world. Because of this, suicide rates are very high, and costs are very high. Nearly as many citizens are killed each month, as were killed in the first seven years of the Iraq war. The suicide rate of children between the ages of five and fourteen is eleven times higher than that of twenty-five other countries.
(Douglas, Burgess, 1986) Criminal profiling started way back in the 1960’s and became more popular as the years went by. Homicide rates were extremely high back then and tended to increase at numerous rates. Criminal profiling presented a way to understand who is capable of what crime. What do the surveys prove? To answer this question, many people think that criminal profiling is solely based on race, age, and gender but it becomes much more than that.
