Aubrey Love 6/6/2011 LA Cluster Sem: 8 Gang Culture Changing Los Angeles Los Angeles is the largest city on the West Coast, the most populous in California, home to more than 3.5 million citizens, and the second most populous city in the nation, following New York City. Nicknamed the “City of Angels,” L.A. houses people from more than 140 countries speaking 224 different languages. But is Los Angeles really a “City of Angels?” L.A.’s cultural diversity causes the city to be divided into many neighborhoods, many of which were towns that were annexed by the growing city. Although Los Angeles is diverse, with this diversity comes animosity between certain ethnic groups fighting for a recognition and territory. Los Angeles is often referred to as the “gang capital of North America” home to some of the world’s most notorious gangs.
Since the mid-1950s, suicide rates around the world have risen by 60%. Rates among young people have risen even faster, to the point where they are now the age group at highest risk in 35% of the world’s countries. The specific demographics, however, vary from country to country. China’s pattern, for example, is very different from that of most other countries. China has a suicide mortality rate of 23:100,000, with a total of 287,000 deaths by suicide each year.
Over the past year the rate of robberies has increased by more than 1,000. Philadelphia has a poverty rate of 25% percent, which is currently the highest percentage in the United States. Philadelphia developing] a large population and high poverty rate robbery higher than that of Baltimore. Baltimore having a population of 639,919 is a metropolitan area that is located in the state of Maryland. The city of Baltimore has had 3,336 robberies in 2010 .
In 1997 there were actually the fewest murder numbers in New York since 1967. The sociological theory of the crime rates in both cities is that the poverty level is so high, and those living in poverty choose crime to supplement their life. It is believed that

Hispanics or Latinos constitute 16.7% of the total United States population, or 52 million people, making it home to the largest community of Spanish speakers outside of Mexico according to the Pew Research Hispanic Center, surpassing Argentina, Colombia, and Spain within the last decade. Latinos overall are the second largest ethnic and Hispanic and Latino Americans are the largest of all the minority groups, but Black Americans are the largest minority among the races, after White Americans in general (non-Hispanic and Hispanic). Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans, Colombian Americans, Dominican Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, Spanish Americans, and Salvadoran Americans are some of the Hispanic and Latino American national origin groups. Hispanics and Latinos differ on their political views depending on their location and background, but the majority (57%) either identify themselves as or support the Democrats, and 23% identify themselves as Republicans. There are 1,524,513 prisoners in state and federal prisons in the United States and when local jails are included, the total climbs to 2,284,913, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. “The International Centre for Prison Studies at King’s College, London calculates that the United States has an incarceration rate of 743 per 100,000 people, compared to 325 in Israel, 217 in Poland, 154 in England and Wales, 96 in France, 71 in Denmark, and 32 in India”(Veronique de Rugy). High incarceration rate is not a result of high crime as many would think. “US crime rates are comparable to other European countries with much lower incarceration rates” (Aljazeera).
Asian Americans are the fastest-growing group among all racial and ethnic groups identified in the U.S. Census. The numbers of Asian Americans have doubled in every census, from 0.60 million to 10.03 million in a span of less than 50 years (Sue, 2006) Korean Americans make up the fifth largest subgroup population of Asian Americans. Around 1.7 million of Korean descent resides in the U.S., making it the second largest Korean population living outside of Korea. Hawaii, California, and New York have the highest concentration of Korean Americans in the United States. (Chang, 2013) They are a highly urban population and are scattered all over the country.
Almost every high school student gets into a situation that they don’t want to be in. Peer pressure is an example of one of these situations. Peer pressure of doing drugs can lead to a high school athlete to get himself in a big trouble. Who is to say that he will be the next to get randomly drug tested. Since June of 1995, the US Supreme Court has been all for random drug interscholastic student athlete drug testing.
