The Diary of the Freedom Writers Prompt 1 In Diary 94, a Freedom Writer argues that people should "rock the boat" and " speak out" when they witness an injustice. Being a Junior in high school I have observed many unjust actions and behaviors in school and outside of school. One example was when I saw two kids fighting in front of my house. At first I heard loud noises outside of my house which turned to screams and caught my attention. I went to my window to check it out and saw two kids across the street fighting. I thought about going out to stop the fight, but I assumed there would be someone to take care of it. Therefore, I went back to doing my homework and texting my friends. If I could go back in time and revisit that moment, I would have gone outside to stop the fight and get their parents. Also, it is difficult for people to speak out or act against wrongdoings because most people are too shy or even scared. This is because when one speaks out he or she might put themselves at risk of getting hurt depending on the circumstance, or some people might not want to get into other people's business. Prompt 2 The writer of Diary 36 of The Freedom Writers Diary asks, "Why should I read books about people that don’t look like me? People that I don’t even know and that I'm not going to understand because they don't understand me!" I would answer this student's question if I was his or her teacher by explaining how learning about people that don't look like me affected my life and how it can affect his or her life. Also, I can explain how knowledge in school comes from people that don't look like us and in order to survive the student must read about others.
