Freedom isn’t what you think it is When Frederick Douglass first started to learn, that’s where it all started. He started to branch out and talking to white kids and having them teach him how to read. He would go into town and do his errands really fast just so he can get a quick lesson in before he was needed back. To me this says that if you really want to do/ learn something you can do it. If you put your mind toward something then it will come true, no matter what it is. He wants to brighten his knowledge of how to read and write. Slave owners did not want their slaves to learn how to read and write because it humanized them, and they did not want the slaves to know how bad they had it. Some masters have over 1,000 others only have 2 or 3 slaves. The more slaves you have, the more work you can get done on your land. The more work you have, the more money you will make and then you can buy more slaves. The people who had just a few slaves used them to help around the house and be their servants. Frederick was a slave on a plantation, but he was to young to do slave work out in the field. I could not get a job until I turned 16 but I could not find one until I finally got one when I was 17. My job was at Double Dave’s, which if you do not know, is a pizza place. I started out as a kitchen worker and got paid minimal wage, at the time was $7.25, then I got a promotion. I started to get $7.75 and worked a whole lot more than I did. I was working about 15-20 hours before and about 45-50+ hours after my promotion. I wouldn’t say that they get promotions but in a sort of way they do if they are lucky. Everybody has different freedoms than the next person; one’s freedom could be getting away from their parents. While another person’s freedom could be getting away from their boss or brothers and sisters. They get away from them one way or another and they know how to stay away from them. Some slaves knew how to get away form their masters, while others didn’t even try because they knew what would happen to them. Technology keeps us away from all the important things in life, like sight seeing and paying attention in class. There is always something in the way of getting freedom; all we have to do is find a way to get around those obstacles. Once you do that, your life will be much better
