The habits include 1: Being proactive, 2: Beginning with end in mind, 3: Putting First Things First, 4: Thinking win-win 5: seeking first to understand, Then to be Understood, 6: Synergizing, And last 7: Sharpening the saw. The topics discussed in this book are all true to life and have real life examples. All these habits provide many helpful tools and solutions in a fun and new way. The first habit from the 7 habits I would like to discuss is Habit 1: Being Proactive. This was the most challenging habit for me to personally work on.
My Learning Style Essay The reason for doing this essay is to try and discover which is my best and worst way to learn and then to come up with a strategy for improving my ability to learn. The first thing that I need to do is research what different learning styles there is, after I have done this I can determine what are my preferred learning styles. I have always thought I learned better when I took a hands-on approach. This type of learning is called Physical (kinesthetic). After taking a short questionnaire, I also found that I prefer to learn with visual aids, such as pictures and graphs.
In this essay you will see my findings on my particular learning style, personality type, and how I can now benefit by knowing this and how to expand my knowledge in implementing other way of learning. “Overall, learning is a blend of various styles.” (Pheifer, 2009). I discovered that my style of learning is that I am a visual learner! This came as a surprise to me since I always thought of myself as a hands on learner. Although in reflecting on this for a bit I realize that I do visualize and retain more information by reading and studying material, not just the hands on approach.
Sometimes I try to switch it up to reading and watching, but I always seem to fail at that. So now I go hands on as often as possible and work with physical objects or any activity. A good example of learning through this style is in order for me to learn a new a new item or any new equipment that I have to learn, I pretty much play around with the item until I know that I am ok with it or I have full knowledge of how it works or how to work it. I might apply my own learning style to study through this course and the program. I think it will be better for me so that I won’t get confused by switching to a different learning style.
1. What are your human services policy related "take-aways," i.e., new information, theories, processes, etc.? This course has been a constant learning experience. From the materials assigned to the discussions between classmates, I have taken away an extensive amount of knowledge that not only be helpful through the rest of my graduate program, but will be a prime tool from my career. The different theories and processes learned will be a major asset to my career as a counselor, juvenile probation officer and a creator of a youth rehabilitation and prevention program.
When the task itself appeals, medals are only artificial and superficial devices or worse, for the mask is off!” Prosser and Allen further state that this dual personality will persist as long as we continue to distinctualize between the artificial learning environment of the typical classroom and the natural processes of learning. I whole-heartedly agree with this theory. Actually, having been through the education system, I can say that I’ve lived the theory at times. Certainly, there were subjects that were genuinely interesting to me and with those subjects, the things I learned in those classes are still with me. Conversely, those subjects or classes in which I wore the “mask”, I did what I had to do to make a good grade, then shed the information because I didn’t see the significance that the information had in my life at that time.
With each of these note taking methods have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages, once again using the correct tool for the job at hand. With many, many more being available to you to use at your own discretion. Including the PQRST method (Preview, Question, Read, Summary, Test), The Method of Loci, and The Leitner Method. With those being examples we won't be going into in this presentation/essay. I always recommend finding the method that best suits you and your study style, while always remembering to space your studying
As I sit and think about it I recall learning more by experience. School for me set the foundation to learn, but I learned the most by making mistakes and seeing things for myself. Life is the biggest factor of learning in my opinion. Some may think school or their career teaches them more. But life lessons are the best and factor into your future lessons.
According to Ruggiero (2012), “It means getting information others overlook by searching in ways and places that never occur to the uncreative.” (p.138). These three subjects have fortified my creative thinking skills. My critical thinking has changed significantly since day one of this course. I have noticed the positive changes in my thinking and how in turn it has brought positive actions and solutions to problems and issues. I had placed myself as a challenged thinker at stage two in the beginning of the course because I wanted to be fair with myself.
I do it carefully and seek answers and information first before doing anything, which also makes me inquisitive. As a student, I am also balanced. I always come to a point that I balance everything in school even though when it comes to studies, arts & crafts and social life. Being a thinker may be a possible weakness for me because I usually tend to overthink possibilities. Although I am already able to choose from choices, make decisions, and distinguish whether it’s good or bad.
