He tells her that she is acting in a way he doesn't approve of, he says that she is ‘walkin’ wavy’ and that this is making men notice her and ‘their heads are turning like windmills’. The thing is, it is Eddie who we see is the one who notices her growing up into an attractive woman, and his desire for her is the cause of the tragedy that ends the play. The way their relationship changes through Act 1 sets up the situation that will end in the death of Eddie at the end of the play. Eddie Carbone and his wife Beatrice have brought up Eddie’s niece Catherine like their own daughter. They do not have children of their own.
She states, “She had a fine person, many brilliant attainments; but her mind was poor, her heart barren by nature” (Brontë 1.239). She describes Miss Ingram as beautiful but a shallow person with no depth. Along with Jane, Mr. Rochester seems to see this and her true aspiration of only marrying him for his money. On the other hand, Jane’s wittiness and sharp responses to Mr. Rochester confusing comments enraptures Mr. Rochester. Mrs. Reed and her children had always treated Jane with disrespect; but when Mrs. Reed is dying Jane forgets her harsh treatment and stays with her until she died.
Cal The antagonist is Cal. Cal is clearly the opposing character. He may seem as is if he is the victim, but all he does is deliberately attack Andre’s mother not understanding her situation and position. According to the play, Cal states “How many of us don’t want to hurt our mothers and live in mortal terror of their disapproval. Our lives aren’t furtive, just our feelings towards people like you” (50).
Knowing that Hulga/Joy disposition toward those girls was unfavorable and she ignored daughter’s need to be accepted. Mrs. Hopewell does not accept Hulga/Hulga/Joy and do not see her daughter as a highly educated thirty-two year old woman she is. She sees her as a young child coming of age who loses her leg in a hunting accident. She pities Hulga/Joy and defends her attitude due to her disability. Mrs. Hopewell think that Hulga/Joy has missed out on the best things in life and “who had never danced a step or had any normal good time” when she was younger (52).
As a child Hindley treats Heathcliff poorly and always liked to hurt him by hitting him and insulting him, but he always found enjoyment in relaxing with Catherine, Hindley’s Sister. Every since Heathcliff is first brought to the Earnshaws house Hindley has been treating him very badly but Catherine accepted him into the family. Nelly says about Hindley that, “The young master had learned to regard his father as an oppressor rather than a friend, and Heathcliff as a usurper of his parent’s affections and his privileges; and he grew bitter with brooding over these injuries” (31). Hindley did not like Mr. Earnshaw because he always told him not to bother Heathcliff. Hindley always treated Heathcliff very badly for a long time, and Heathcliff began to despise Hindley more and more.
He is disliked by his children especially the oldest son because he is hypocritical by doing the things he scolds them not to. The mother of the family (played by Jessica Chastain) is loved and adored by her sons. She teaches them to live freely and to enjoy the world around them. The parent’s contrasting views confuse the oldest son and make him resentful of the situation he is currently living in. The film is not so cut and dry as the previous plot summary makes it sees.
When his most loved daughter comments on her sister’s reactions about his wishes, he then begins to go insane after irrationally separating his land between two of his three daughters based on their charm bringing terrible consequences for everyone. I would say that’s Lear’s first mistake; separating power and responsibility. His two eldest daughters are prepared to be in control of their own lives (age wise) but not necessarily mature enough. A reason of immaturity from the daughters that Lear didn’t notice was how fond they were of him when he declared his wanting, therefore, they aren’t ready to rule a kingdom. They allowed their father to act as if he is still in charge.
Mrs. Mooney was previously involved in a dysfunctional marriage to a “shabby stooped little drunkard” (61). Similar to her own marriage, Mrs. Mooney indirectly forces Polly to marry for money. Mrs. Mooney is a ruthless character as a result of her previous troubles. Consequently, Mrs. Mooney’s maternal connection with Polly is non-existent, turning their relationship into a business. When Mrs. Mooney is observing Polly’s interactions with young men, she becomes frustrated that “none of [the men] meant business” and considers sending Polly back to her previous job (63).
The relationship bewteen Mr. Brunty and his daughter Hope seems to be loving, yet they do not always get along and are in many ways distant to each other. ”She loves Mr. Brunty yet cannot get along with him, just as he loves her (she believes) and cannot get along with her”. Hope tends to feel that her father does not understand the things that are important to her. ”You just don't get the point”, she tells him about the situation with Evander Jones. She wants him to share her passions, but he does not understand them.
She doesn’t think much of herself. She doesn’t like the fact that she’s pregnant. The child’s father called her a trashy whore. She looked at herself that way too since the view of the child at the scanning made her feel like she wasn’t a trashy whore. She is well aware of the fact that she hasn’t done anything with her life, and that her dreams will not come true.
