Fortune Hunter The movie The Heiress is based on a real life situation. Many people can relate or be familiar with the term “Money Hunters” and “Gold Diggers.” The movie takes place in Washington Square sometime in the late 1800’s early 1900’s. A time when your transportation was a carriage, and women wore big dresses with really tight corsets to make their figure look nice. Social class was important; upper class didn’t really mix with those of lower class. The characters in this story have each a unique description. Catherine Sloper, the main character is a very plain, shy young girl. Catherine’s mother has passed away and has grown up to be nothing like her according to her father Dr. Austin Sloper. Dr. Sloper is very stern and things very little of his daughter. His sister Lavina might think very little of Catherine but she loves her and doesn’t show her opinion throughout the movie. And finally Morris Townsend, he is a very attractive young man who claims he is in love with Catherine. Throughout the film there are conflicts and a plot. An internal conflict would be the dislike Dr. Sloper has for his daughter. He continually criticizes Catherine for not being like her mother and for being so dull and having very little social skills. He believes no man will ever love her. An external conflict in the film is the hate Dr. Sloper has for Morris. He is well aware of Morris scheme to falsely love his daughter. Dr. Sloper tries to make his daughter aware but she is blinded by her love for Morris. The plot in the film is Catherine falling head over heels for Morris and he only wanting her for her money. The theme of this story is that Dr. Sloper is a brilliant man, and he is absolutely correct about Morris. Even though he tries to show it to his daughter, he does so very cruelly.
