My second oldest sister was never a big fan of school. She believed she was not smart enough and that school was way too hard for her. She got pregnant by the age of 19 years old; she became a young, and happy mother. Her decision of starting a family at a young age was always part of her plans; she had wanted this all along. Her choice was never based on how school made her feel but on how she felt.
But, the mother finally does give in, knowing that otherwise, her daughter cannot start school. Letting go of her control is difficult, but recognizable gesture to the daughter when she notes, “But finally, I see in her eyes the closing gate” (Jones p. 61). At the end of the story, however, “[my mother] puts] hand down at my side, which is not part of the game”
I wanted to go every place she had ever been”. (Kidd, 14-15) Lily is very connected with her mother even though she is no longer living. Knowing about her mother would help Lily come to peace with the subject of her mother’s death and her own past. However, Rosaleen, Lily’s nanny thinks otherwise. Rosaleen believes that Lily should just leave the topic alone and that she may discover something she just does not want to know.
Bella’s guilt caused by her mother’s fear of loneliness has left her short of any male relations. She cannot escape the wrath of her mother, and continually surrenders to her mother's will. Also, Bella has felt she cannot start her own relationship because her mother, in an effort to protect her living children, she has trained them not to feel by hardening them with punishments such as locking them in a closet or beating them with her cane” (Bloom, Harold. “List of characters in Lost in Yonkers. p67-68).
The lost of Codi’s baby is another reason for distant attitude towards others. She had no one to go to for comfort. Not even by Loyd or her own father, Doc Homer. This then makes Codi create a personal wall towards others in the fear of letting others come in her life. However, Hallie never went through a lost of a loved one as bad as Codi did.
When Liddy fell pregnant I was shocked. Liddy’s character showed that she was determined not to have a teenage pregnancy like what happened to her mother. Liddy said “I feel sorry for my Mum having to bring me up on her own”, Liddy getting pregnant shocked me because she didn’t seem that kind of girl. This event was important because it shows that a teenage pregnancy can happen to anyone. Even
Esperanza will never feel comfortable around Rosaura because she is always with Tita. She does not have the time to build a relationship with Rosaura because she is never around her. The relationship Tita and Nacha have is mimicked with Tita and Rosaura’s children; they all are all uncomfortable with their birth mothers and only feel comfortable with their
Maturity vs. Naivety In her short story, “The Garden Party”, Katherine Mansfield employs a theme of innocence versus experience and assigns certain characters to play the roles. The Sheridan’s youngest daughter, Laura, plays the main role for innocence, while the surrounding cast members, those involved in Laura’s life, represent experience. In this short story, Mansfield uses the circumstances that face Laura to show her desire to be a mature woman, emulating her mother and elder sisters. Throughout these situations, Laura continually failed to grasp her future role in Sheridan family or her place in the world. The story opens with the experienced mother placing the responsibility of their annual garden party on the shoulders of her daughter stating “I’m determined to leave everything to you children this year”(Mansfield 2347).
Breastfeeding or Formula…You decide Among several decisions a woman must make while she is pregnant, one of them is whether or not she will choose to breastfeed her new bundle of joy. In the society we live in and this day in age this decision has become more of a choice rather then long ago when formula was nonexistent and the main way of nurturing your baby was to breastfeed. Woman in todays age are blind to the health risks and lack of bonding their babies may endure having not been breastfed. To add to that, many of the several formula companies tend to bend and obscure the truth and bribe the doctors into talking up/promoting their products. I am aiming to address and investigate the matters at hand by explaining why breastfeeding is
And goes on about how the mother has seen the daughter grow up and also cherishes the sweet memories that they had.The title of this poem suggests that it is dedicated to a daughter leaving home and most probably it is by a mother. However, after reading the poem for the first time, it seemed out of topic as all it talks about is a mother talking about a time when she taught her daughter to bike ride. But then after reading it more than once, I realised that it actually has a deeper meaning that shows how the daughter has grown in all the years and how sometimes she failed in life but the mother was always there to help her around. Nevertheless this poem ends in a sad tone as it refers to how mothers will always have a concern for their child no matter how old they grow. The main theme in this poem is sentimental, as the mother is sort of looking back to the times when her daughter was young and travels through time as she talks about she bidding her goodbye. The choice of the opening of the poem, “When I taught you at eight to ride a
