Eugene is kind of a rebel, he breaks the rules by starting his little business where he writes papers for money, he doesn’t do this by himself, but with help from Jason’s sister who he manipulates so she writes most of the papers and he justifies this act by saying “after all, he had started the business.” Jason on the other hand is described as a very good student who wants to do well in school and as he is described in the text: “He always played by the rules… was so serious and straightlaced.” This is also shown by how determined he is to finish his senior science thesis which had to do with a hamster experiment. Jason is just a very good person who never would break the rules and as he is described “Jason was so honest and good that a single look from him could make a person feel sordid and corrupt.” This shows what a good person he is and how other people also see him that way. Eugene doesn’t only have a big impact on Jason’s sister, but also on Jason. This is seen in the end where they are taking care of Eugene’s owl, and even after the owl had killed all of Jason’s hamsters for his experiment, he still cares for it because it is Eugene’s owl “if the owl hadn’t belonged to Eugene, I think Jason would have killed it.” Here it is also seen how Jason is more tolerant to the situation with the owl only because it belonged to Eugene and this show how big of an influence he has on people. Another example of Eugene’s big impact on people and animals for that sake, is in the very end when the owl dies because it needed Eugene and couldn’t survive without him, this is a very symbolic effect of how strong the power he holds on people
