Fire Sprinklers; The Law or Your Choice? Three dozen states have rejected the idea of required fire sprinklers. “They are only required in commercials, and Hickory Hills and Skokie require them. If you remodel 60% of your house, then you need to put them in” (Jack Janik). Despite putting out a fire quicker, people should have a choice for fire sprinklers because it is a bigger cost and it may do potential water damage. Most people don’t want to put more money into their house. Other people have a lot of valuable items in their house. Homeowners don’t want to lose money. Wouldn’t homeowners want a choice on whether or not you want to spend a lot more money? According to Jack Janik, a business owning constructor, “You have to have a bigger water supply line. It’s $15,000 for a regular sprinkler system in the house. Plus, you need the water supply just for the house.” He also states, “If the fire doesn’t ruin your house, then the water will. Then, you will have to spend more money on renovation, new sprinklers, and maybe more for the water supply. That for sure will raise up your budget.” Plus, people may not have enough money to buy the sprinklers for a new house. Then, if it becomes the law, will new homeowners be breaking it? It could go off accidentally and do potential water damage to valuable items. There may be a malfunction and the sprinkler just goes off. Say you have an iPod, phone, laptop or valuable personal items. The sprinkler goes off, the water gets all over your stuff, and damages your personal belongings. Plus, if it accidentally goes off when you are not home, who knows how long the water will be going, the house could be an indoor swimming pool.
