The film follows the pursuit of Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein who grabbed hold of the story by the scruff of its neck before it even was a story. Sticking to what they believe in through thick and thin, through denials, threats, paranoia and personal doubts, their story is one that still stirs and provokes. The impact and effect of the film is informative, as it is an inspiring salute to the heroic accomplishments performed by the two journalists and an uncomfortable reminder of the cynical forces that rule our worlds. The film is a brilliantly clear-headed example of telling a story with both economy and accuracy. Throughout All the President’s Men, the characters are gradually developed through their actions and behavior.
There should absolutely be a checks and balances system within the journalism world. This would keep journalists from not making up stories such as Stephen Glass who went above and beyond when it came to doing it whatever it took to get a story. in an interview with CBS, he explained flat out as to why he fabricated a majority of his stories saying that he did because he loved the feeling of people liking what he wrote. This I feel, is something that any journalist could very easily fall into without the constant pressure of knowing a twin tattle-tale brother is right next to you watching and verifying your every report. A journalist's credibility is one of the most important things they have to keep their career alive and people listening to the news that they release.
I'd say he is hero, the examples you have of why he isn't are perfectly valid, and definitely include them in the essay, but I don't think they dismiss his heroism. He broke at the end and loved Big Brother but this was due to O'Brien's torture and mind control, he always knew this would be the outcome from his diary entries, conversations with Julia and his observations of Jones, Aaronsen and Rutherford at the Chestnut Tree Cafe. Breaking his only promise to Julia, not to betray her, was unavoidable, see his rantings after his visit to room 101, and the brief encounter with Julia when he is released, she betrayed him too, everyone betrays, this is the purpose of room 101, to remove anything you love more than the party and replace it/them with Big Brother. He sneaks around instead of engaging in open revolt because this is the only way any dissent and subversion can take place, the reactions of people during the ten minutes hate, telescreens, hidden microphones, a militarised society and scared/brainwashed spying neighbours giving you up at the first opportunity to save themselves make open revolt instantly futile rather than eventually futile, he took this approach not out of cowardice because it had the potential to subvert the cause of the party more effectively and because it was the only way. His rebellion does further his own desires, but his primary goal is to undermine the goverment, at first he is revolted by Julia, his initial act of sleeping with her was done not out of sexual desire, but out of a desire to rebel against and weaken the government, in his and Julia's opinion doing something for yourself and only yourself WAS the act of rebellion, it was central in their purpose to revolt as it went against the only reason for the party's existance, control and power (see Winston and Julia's conversations in the flat, and O'Brien's explanation of
The publicity of the case and the one-sided role of the media caused a majority of people, internationally, to be biased and influenced. This impact then led to numerous problems and difficulties in being treated fairly, such as finding an impartial jury. This factor of having preconceived idea meant that the jury had already decided Lindy Chamberlain’s fate, opposing the justice being “served,” legitimately. Wiping away any chance for Lindy Chamberlain to prove her innocence creates an inevitable outcome. The Chamberlains being judged under a heavily biased jury influenced by the media, therefore shows the maltreatment of the case by the justice system and the society.
This is definitely what happened to Mr. Thomas with this particular story and he and his counsel have every right to fight the living crap out of not just the story, but the allegations. They ended being false and the fact this station wanted to be the first to report on such a big story had it been true really opened the door for legal action on behalf of Mr. Thomas and anyone else who was effected by the
Both Gandhi and King fought for what they believed in, and they both won and are now very well- known across the world. They both made an extraordinary impact on the world. They made history. Both King and Gandhi are two of the greatest and most influential leaders known today, because no matter how badly people constantly criticized them for what they believed in and no matter how hard people tried to bring them down, both King and Gandhi never gave
Ida exposed a powerful businessman's " corruption in business and political lawlessness", making her a "muckraker" as well ("People & Events: Ida Tarbell, 1857-1944" 1). This investigative journalist revealed the truth without pushing the limit, but still had a major impact by informing the public of this dishonesty in business. The positive influence Ida Tarbell had on American society shows how "muckraker" is a complimentary statement. In conclusion, "muckraker" is a positive term used to describe a devoted investigative journalist who exposes injustices committed by the leaders of the political and business worlds. They reveal the truth of an injustice in society, helping to better improve society.
So how could a man who has always stood firm on his morals, and his virtues, take any monetary goods to help grease any wheels, on a fraud charge? The even more important question is, is he guilty, which the legal answer will be a long time in coming. The more important answer, the public answers, should be played out in the next few months, because what we have learned in the past few years, from politicians to celebrities, if the public forgives your indiscretion, than there is always a possibility of a
These illegals come to expect the handouts, which are happily given to them with no questions asked and the people here legally come to resent the government for giving these handouts. Crime rates skyrocket, innocents are hurt and then medical cost skyrocket, thus ending in another viscous cycle. This is a cycle that will only keep repeating itself, unless we as a country strive to change what we are doing and start holding people, all people accountable for their actions. It must be said that if you want to become an American citizen there is a certain protocol that must be followed, and they there are certain, important rules that must be followed, that if these rules are not followed there will be
Our roots, which is basically our round and where we come from. Society can build upon past accomplishments, and it also helps us to speculate the future. The first, and most significant reason history is important is because we learn from our mistakes. If there was no history then everyone would make the same mistakes over and over. That is why it is very good for someone of high rank in the United States Military to know a good sum of history.
