Gambling with being first… The media drive to score on the Isiah Thomas story Ethical Issue in the Mass Media Paper Alec Smith Zezetj7@gmail.com I had to read this story twice just to make sure I understood it totally in it’s entireity. I was very shocked first and foremost that at the time of the publication which took place in the summer of 1990 that this type of journalism even exsisted. The most facisnating thing about this story was not just the fact it was a NBA Hall of Fame basketball player who was involoved in a potential scandal. It was the fact that Mr. Thomas was accussed of being a high stakes gambler, a money launderer and not to mention a liar. However this guy received his information from a source that is not deemed credible in the journalistic area. By doing this This does not mean that someone won't object or try to stop you, even though they don't have the legal authority to do so. Sometimes people, including the police, don't want something publicized, and with this story neither the FBI, the local law enforcement and definitely Mr. Thomas did not want this mess being out there. Even though the charges generally can't be sustained and those authorities risk a false arrest charge, the arrest effectively stops the reporter from covering the event. Thus, in these rare cases, the intended result is achieved and it really did affect the series as Mr. Thomas probably played the worst series in his Hall of Fame 16 year career. This is definitely what happened to Mr. Thomas with this particular story and he and his counsel have every right to fight the living crap out of not just the story, but the allegations. They ended being false and the fact this station wanted to be the first to report on such a big story had it been true really opened the door for legal action on behalf of Mr. Thomas and anyone else who was effected by the
