Plot, Point of View, and Development of Character in Junot Diaz’s Fiesta, 1980 In the story Fiesta, 1980 the title gives a first impression of what the story is mainly about. Diaz starts the story with an exposition to help us better understand some of the key characters in the story. The story starts out explaining that the family is getting ready to go to a party to celebrate Yunior’s aunt and uncle finally moving to the Unites States. The point when Papi arrives home and rushes to the bathroom while putting his hand up to stop Mami when she tries talking to him, signifies his air of authority. Further, the comment that Yunior makes about his Papi going to shower to “wash off the evidence quick”(150) due to Yuniors notion that his Papi was probably with the Puerto Rican woman, brings further detail as to the kind of man Papi is. Also in the beginning the author gives some glimpse into what the main characters are like. The story portrays Mami as a peacemaker and someone who tries to avoid conflict. Yunior’s brother Rafa seems to have similar interests as Yunior because of the comment about them not wanting to go to the party but rather be outside playing ball with the other kids. Rafa also seems to be someone who would rather get out of the way then to stick up for Yunior to Papi. There is not much to be known about Madai other than she is younger than Yunior and thought by him as cute. Papi being authoritative due to his dismissal of Mami and again when he pulls Yunior up by the ear when he finds out the boy at dinner. We learn that Yunior gets carsick and Papi does not allow him to eat before long car trips because he has thrown up in the car before and Papi will not have another incident like that again. This is also where the rising action takes place. Papi’s anger towards Yunior for eating when he isn’t supposed to causes the conflict in the story. It
