I strongly agree with Franklin D. Roosevelt’s quote “There is nothing to fear but fear itself” Parents fear that their children are not safe what so ever, and are always at risk of being abducted, or with a bad group. However that is on the small scale. Our fear of domestic terrorism has grown ridiculously over the last 20 years! Similarly, if we look to history we can find another fear driven example, Japanese-American’s being detained in World War Two. America is moving forward as ‘The Home of The Free’ but is being driven by fear. First, Parents around the country believe that their kids are in danger at every moment. They are sucked into what the media wants. Every day, locally and nationally the news reports different ways that your child may be in trouble or in danger, when actually, the chances of being kidnapped are very, very low. However that is not the greatest fear. Parents also have a great fear of who their kid’s hangout with, because of this ‘over fear’, and lack of trust it often leads to a damaging relationship with them. From the fear that parents have on their children about being in the right crowd, and making sure that they are kept safe from abductors, to the constant fear of a terrorist attack taking place on US soil, to imprisoning innocent Japanese-America citizens just because of their ethnicity. We have seen one constant the whole time, and that is one group of people suffering from real problems and issues while the media blown up stories, and fear driven messages are getting all the attention. This is because people have a tendency to pay more attention to the problems that are “advertised” The media and government know this, and use it to their advantage.
