In our country nearly one half of households own a gun and nearly thirty thousand people die each year from gun shot related wounds (Smock 151). It is because of statistics like these that gun control has become one of the most heated issues that our country is currently facing. While it is obvious that guns are dangerous weapons that must be used responsibly, many people are debating whether or not stricter laws should be put in to place in an attempt to lower the harms caused by guns. Many states and cities across the nation have already established laws that have made it harder for people to get their hands on guns. Many extremists have even asked for guns to be completely taken out of the hands of everyday citizens.
The suicide rate of children between the ages of five and fourteen is eleven times higher than that of twenty-five other countries. Some would say that the United States of America is much too violent. Abuse in America is very bad. An abuser is five times more likely to kill an abused woman if he/she owns a firearm. In addition, in the states with a higher rate of gun ownership, the gun death rate is seven times higher than other states
and Robert Kennedy the 1960’s were two foundational instances when the government knew they had to act and strengthen gun control laws. Gun control laws have always been an issue for every state. One of the biggest issues is that we don’t have enough people that are willing to speak up for stricter gun control laws. According to an Associated Press poll in December, “only half of Americans thought that gun laws should be stricter and 15% actually said they should be less strict.” I think we can all agree that gun control laws should be stricter. There are people who are mentally ill that are able to purchase guns with the intent of killing people.
Jennie Kartchner English 1010 Bryce Dixon Tuesday/Thursday 11/13/2010 Gun Control: Are we violating the Second Amendment? Gun control, as we know it, consists of the government restricting the ability of individual citizens to purchase weapons. The different types of gun control vary from waiting periods between when you purchase the gun and when you actually get it, background checks so that high-risk people can't purchase guns through legal channels, and completely banning certain types of guns. With the Second Amendment giving American citizens the right to bear arms, and approximately fifty percent of Americans owning some form of a firearm, issues involving the ownership and possession of guns
Local agencies have been involved in the gun control issue for many years. When interviews were conducted of local law enforcement and other prospective agencies; the majority feel that crime would drop substantially if more people owned and could properly use a firearm. A small percentage did agree with the current political views, that the problem in this country is that guns are to easily assessable to the general public. Many of the officers interviewed are retired sheriff’s department in Texas and Colorado, in these agencies the consensus is that stricter gun laws will not detour violent or aggravated crime. The application of stricter gun control laws will in fact hinder law enforcement agencies across America.
Thus, the problem of criminal gun violence is concentrated within a very small subset of gun owners, indicating that gun control aimed at the general population faces a serious needle-in-the-haystack problem.” The vast majority of citizens buying firearms are only doing it merely for their own protection. Criminals are always going to have access to firearms may it be legally or illegally. So the worst thing we could possibly do is to outlaw guns for the whole population. That would leave crime victims utterly defenseless. Gun ownership plays a big role in personal safety.
She is of the perception that high rates of injury and gun mortality are on the increase due to lenient gun control policies. She argues that the increased possession of firearms, especially illegal guns, has increased gun violence and organized criminal activities. According to (Peterson & Stebner, 2013) Kelly also argues that on average up to 32,000 people lose their lives while 69,000 people are injured in the whole of America due to guns. Gun mortality and injury not only reduce the country’s productivity and performance but also cost the U.S over $100 billion to especially law enforcement agencies in fighting
Gun control Gun restriction legislation is currently in progress to stop the sale of automatic rifles, and clip size. These new proposed legislations would not stop the mass killings that caused this new kind of fear. While nothing is going to happen like the gun laws in England, where private ownership of a assault rifle is non existent, the government is trying to stop these killings that have struck fear into the American public, alternatively no one is proposing the laws in Switzerland that state it is not right for guns laws to be restricted in any way. The current gun restrictions on a nation-wide basis differs from state to state, however, one law is clear throughout the whole nation “the right of the people to keep and
“Can you name one law that would keep guns out of the hands of criminals” (Webster)? Assault Weapons Ban: “Handguns are used in about 90% of all firearm murders” (Webster). No legitimate study in the U.S. has ever shown that gun control has any positive impact on crime. People want to believe gun control will reduce crime, but the truth is that gun control will never work. History has shown that gun control will never work.
It has been said that it is not the fault of the gun, but the person holding the gun that is to blame. Although this statement has a truth to it, it is a fact that a household that contains a firearm is at a much higher risk of having a gun related crime, or accident then a household that does not. In Gun Control and Gun Rights (Crooker, 2003, 5) it is said, “a gun kept in the home is forty three times more likely to kill a member of the household or a friend than an intruder”. This is especially true when there are children in the household. Even a responsible gun owner is at a higher risk of a gun related accident, just by having the firearm in the home.
