Describe what your role, responsibilities and boundaries would be as a teacher in terms of the teaching/training cycle. The teacher’s role, responsibilities and boundaries are permanently changing, evolving and being assessed in order to give the best possible learning experience to all students. Using the teaching/training cycle can benefit your personal development if you refer to and use its principles. The first stage of the cycle is Identify needs, this begins with the initial assessment where we can determine the learners needs and the correct course for them to achieve. We use a quickscan, and VAK test which helps to determine the learner style, (Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic).
The use of journals assisted them tracking their thoughts which led to their behaviors in the classroom. The teachers realized pre and post thoughts were different. Cognitive coaching includes skills that are necessary for our future leaders. When teachers can learn from each other the impact on the student’s is priceless. The best way to learn is to teach.
These lenses correlate to processes of self-reflection, student feedback, peer assessment, and engagements with scholarly literature. Cogitating upon these processes provides the foundation for good teaching and the means to become an excellent teacher. The autobiographical lens, or self-reflection, is the foundation of critical reflection. Teachers may focus on their previous experiences as a learner, or on their experiences as a teacher in order to "become aware of the paradigmatic assumptions and instinctive reasonings that frame how we work" (30). By interrogating, for example, teaching journals, evaluations, student/peer feedback, personal goals/outcomes, and/or role model profiles, teachers can reveal aspects of their pedagogy that may need adjustment or strengthening.
There are many reasons for conducting classroom assessments – assigning grades is an obvious one. Effective assessment allows teachers to monitor students progress toward achieving learning targets, determine whether instruction is effective, detect students strengths and weaknesses, diagnose learning problems, provide feedback, motivate and engage students, and prepare them for high-stakes tests (McMillan, 2011). Effective assessment therefore enhances teaching and learning as well as allows a means for providing information on student achievement and learning needs (McMillan, 2011). What assessment provides immediate information about how students are progressing in their learning and where they are having difficulties? Formative assessment, or assessment for learning, enhances student learning and achievement and helps teachers improve instruction (Wiliam, 2005).
Finally, keeping assessment tracking records, schemes of work and lesson plans are useful to promote effective teaching and learning, and provide a reference for the teacher to evaluate when considering and planning future courses. There are numerous types of records that the teacher should keep and maintain throughout the academic year. Records of work/training records allow the teacher to assess the work and training that has been covered to date. Pass rates and trends are also extremely useful to keep as they allow the teacher to evaluate the success of their teaching and the learners experience, which in turn will improve the quality of the
Summary of Chapters 1 & 2 Chapter 1 introduces the questions of what makes a good teacher and what should good education be. It basically explains the criteria they used define their variables, to select subjects, and to determine the validity and reliability of their sources. For the sake of the study described in this book, an outstanding professor was defined as one who is remarkably successful in helping their students learn in a substantial and sustained manner. In addition, they should be able to significantly influence the ways they think, act, and feel. The study also considered those who were able to motivate their students to learn and understand the material rather than just absorbing the information presented to them.
The most important qualities of an outstanding educator. The most important qualities of an outstanding educator relate to the way they interact with the students and present the material to them. An outstanding educator cultivates the ability to listen to and understand the student to better determine the level of comprehension the student has attained. The educator must be patient with the students and allow students of differing levels of ability and achievement the time and tools they need to absorb the material. They must differentiate the lessons with the goal of reaching each student's zone of proximal development.
Effective communication is fundamental in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults alike. In the role of Classroom Assistant it is vital to develop good, appropriate relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and any other professional third party agencies involved in a child’s care and education. To provide a conducive learning environment, adults in the classroom must work together by communicating clearly and professionally with each other, both verbally and non-verbally. This will avoid confusion and inconsistency during lessons. For example I find it essential to discuss the day’s lesson plan and targets with my class teacher.
The implications of the findings were changing beliefs of the observation teacher as well as the demonstration teacher. At times, mentor teachers remain comfortable in the role of “this is how I 4 learned to teach and this is how teaching will always be at our school”. Teachers periodically rethink “outside of the box” and move away from the mindset of sharing the same old concepts to new teachers. (Boring!!!) Teaching and learning styles must change if education is to propel into the future with quality-educated teachers and students.
