UNIT 307 1.1 One of the main roles of any class teacher is to monitor the achievements and assess the progress of each pupil and report their findings to both parents and other members of staff. This is an on-going process and in the role of teaching assistant you will support the teacher during this process. It is important to follow the lesson plan to ensure the objectives are clear to both you and the children to understand what needs to be achieved to enable the assessment to be measured correctly. The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) allows for the value of the context to be linked with the content of the classroom. The Reporting and Assessment Advice ensures that outcomes of these environments are communicated regularly to parents providing them with “easily understood information about how their child is progressing and plans for future learning.” Through my teaching practices, I mindful that my teaching strategies and abilities need to combine with those set out in the initiatives and methodologies to provide a safe and engaging learning environment for all students.

It is essential to observe pupil’s as it enables the teaching assistants and the teacher to make an objective assessment on individual pupils. They are able to establish the pupils: behaviour patterns; their individual learning styles; the level of development; their existing skills; curriculum strengths and weaknesses; their current learning needs and learning achievements. In addition by observing the pupils the teaching assistant and the teacher are able to identify what the children learning needs are which will allow them to plan activities which would appropriate for the individual pupils learning needs, in order to help the pupils achieve their full potential. Furthermore if they notice that the pupils may have a learning difficulties, they are then able to ensure that the pupils is assessed by the Special Education Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) or external assessors if necessary in order to establish if they do have a learning difficulty and would then work with the class teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that they are able to support the needs of the pupil as appropriate and make suitable arrangements.
In contrast, formative assessment is a part of the instructional process and is able to provide essential leaning and teaching information to educators. Formative assessments help to provide educators with more timely information where learning adjustments can be made more immediately. The results of formative assessments can help to guide teachers in knowing where they need to take their instruction next, depending on student learning and understanding of previously learned skills and concepts. There are several benefits of effective communication including the following; Benefits in terms of Pupils It is also important for pupils that I model effective communication skills as a teaching assistant. For example, I must check what I am saying sometimes in moments of stress or excitement, so that the children can understand what our expectations are in school. In order to help the children understand the boundaries of what is acceptable, it is important that we follow them with out fail whilst asking the pupils to behave in a particular way.
