It is important to note that this special emphasis is not to the detriment of others, but is crucial in the aim of retaining and developing those who, historically, would have struggled to remain engaged. Effective strategies and policies in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion are based on meaningful dialogue with learners; ‘Know your learners’ is a key principle to follow. (Gold dust website, 2009). The statutory inclusion statement sets out three principles for developing an inclusive curriculum which all schools have a responsibility to provide. This provides all learners with relevant and challenging learning.
One most important tip is for teachers should educate themselves and learn as much as they can about intellectual disabilities. There are some techniques and strategies that teachers can also use to support children educationally. First teachers must recognize that they can make a difference in student’ lives by finding out what their strengths and interests are, focus on them, and create opportunities for success. Teachers must also be concrete as possible by demonstrating what they mean rather than giving directions verbally and tasks that are longer in steps should be broken down into smaller steps and provide assistance when necessary. As it relates to student skills, teachers should teach life skills such as social skills and occupational awareness and exploration by involving students in group or club activities.
I will be concentrating on the tools and equipment that have been used in education to benefit the student as well as the teacher. There are a number of strategies that one can implement when you have a Visual learner. Learning strategies that can help a visual learner would be to focus on the learning objectives of the class: the student could meet with the teacher to understand better, the learner should look for opportunities to work with new material; a more hands on approach, seek out open-ended studies: problem base learning and case studies, aid to recall when studying for a test: use highlighters for color coding. In Mathematics an abacus was used to solve problems, now a student can program a graphing calculator to solve problems for them. Some schools allow children to bring laptops into class with them, in other schools it is mandatory that all students have a laptop to bring to school.
Planning influences what student will learn, because planning can transform the available time and curriculum materials into activities, assignments and tasks for students so time is the essence of planning. (Woolfolk, Margetts, 2010). To promote effective learning and teaching, implementation of quality plan is significant. Planning should include all the essential ingredients of effective teaching to model the commitment to learning. Effective teaching should acknowledge the impact of factors such as attitudes, perception, expectations, abilities, gender, socio-cultural background and maturity on every learning experience.
While the classroom still needs to have structure (routines, rules, procedures), providing variety within that structured environment can aide in providing optimal learning for all students. Using a variety of instructional approaches such as lectures, PowerPoint presentations, inquiry-based instruction, hands-on experiments, project/problem-based learning, or computer aided instruction, not only addresses the various learning styles of the students in the classroom, but it can help learners become more flexible in their learning. Exposing students to a wide variety of learning styles will enable them to become more flexible learners. Teachers should teach students to be forthcoming about their differences. Show them there is no shame in being different.
I will have had to design the lesson and plan its delivery so that it holds everyone’s interest. I will also have a duty of care, act as a role model and afford pastoral care in some cases. I will have to assess the learners in order to identify their individual needs, and keep records of their progress. Moreover, teachers must educate their students on learning styles and preferences, this will provide the student knowledge, which will enhance their learning and educational experience. Research continues to document, and show that students will enjoy learning, and will learn more when the material and teachers accommodate their learning styles and preferences. Much research has been conducted and published on how people receive and process information. Research has endeavored to ascertain and define how people learn in different environments, such as the classroom, and the work setting.
