THEORY ASSIGNMENT 3 – Explain how you would promote inclusion, equality and diversity with your current/future learners. Identify other points of referral available to meet the potential needs of learners. As a teacher, I must be aware of the students needs in order to promote equal opportunities and diversity and encourage an inclusive learning environment. The first step is to identify any barriers or boundaries that may affect an individual student’s participation in learning. It could be for example learning difficulties, travel issues or financial pressures. It is essential to develop a good relationship with the students to understand and seek to resolve or mitigate any difficulties. As a French teacher, I will ensure that all the resources I will use, for example, pictures, films, articles and the initial assessment, are suitable to all races, religions, ages or disabilities. I will pay special attention to special needs, e.g. the seating for blind or partially sighted, or larger fonts for people with dyslexia. When I teach French, I use different resources to meet all levels, avoid complicated language and diversify the activities to include methods such as role play, small group work or pairs. The objective is to involve the students and to encourage them to participate to the course, treating them equally with no favouritism. Regular assessment, discussion and review of lesson plans throughout the course help the teacher to adapt the learning methods or resources to the students needs. It is important to gather resources and information about the course to make appropriate planning. Once I identify any barriers or boundaries, I use different strategies through the lesson to help the students.
