Deviance Deviance, or behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society, is a common occurrence that is easily observed every day. In the movie Crash, the lives of several complete strangers intersect over the course of two days through many different acts of deviance. When viewed sociologically, many scenes throughout the film can give insight on other’s perspectives and help with broadening the sociological imagination. A white, male, gun shop owner greets an Iranian man and his daughter who are looking to purchase a handgun from his store. Upon hearing the father/daughter pair speak Farsi to one another, the shop owner’s prejudice is made known through his use of racial profiling to come to the conclusion the father is a terrorist. The store owner’s prejudice then leads to discrimination as he demands the Iranian man leave his store, solely due to his ethnic group. In this scene, the shop owner’s deviant behavior violated the social norm and the rights of the Iranian customer. Anthony and Peter, two black males, are walking down the street…show more content…
However, little did he know, the back of the van was full of illegal immigrants. The criminals tell Anthony that the van is worth nothing but they are eager to purchase the illegals for trafficking. The transnational crime of trafficking immigrants across national borders is often an act of organized criminals. Showing yet another, less thought of, form of deviance, Anthony deviates from his typical behavior and does not take the money from these professional criminals. Instead, he frees the scared immigrants in Chinatown and even gives them what little cash he has left in his wallet. Where, Anthony could have taken his cut from the chop shop criminals and bettered his day, he made an important decision to put others first for once and bettered their lives
