Carl Rogers and the person centred therapy The person centred theory was created by a man called Carl Rogers an influential American phycologist After receiving his PhD, Rogers spent a number of years working in teaching. It was during this time that Rogers developed his approach to therapy, which he initially termed "nondirective therapy." This approach, which involves the therapist acting as a facilitator rather than a director of the therapy session, eventually came to be known as person centred therapy. Carl Rogers continued his work with client-centred therapy until his death in 1987. With his emphasis on human potential, Carl Rogers had an enormous influence on both psychology and education. Beyond that, he is considered by many to be one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century. The person centred approach was Carl Rogers’s unique understanding of human’s behaviour, personality and relationships. Carl Rogers believed that if an individual achieved an understanding of his/her feelings also known as self-actualisation then they would achieve the ultimate desire of being a fully functioning person living a good life. In other words the individual would have a positive outlook and a good quality of life within their self and experiences. Rogers also states that the outside climate needs to facilitate these attitudes meaning if a parent loves and encourages a child just as they are, the child will be more likely to become a fully functioning person. However if the parent or outside climate is strict, negative or restrictive towards the child this could mean the child could grow up with a negative imbalance of their feelings.
