Ethics Reflection Ethics in business seems to have taken center stage as companies like Enron, Arthur Anderson, and others have left them in ruins through unethical behavior committed by the executive management and employees. Business ethics have come under close scrutiny in recent years because of mismanagement in organizations like Enron and WorldCom. This paper will explain the role of ethics and social responsibility in strategic planning and will discuss how my ethical perspective has evolved throughout the MBA program. Role of Ethics and Social Responsibility in Developing a Strategic Plan Ethics and social responsibility play an integral role in strategic planning. These ideals are used in organizations to guide and direct the decision-making process and business activities that may bring positive results for the company and its stakeholders. Ethics is defined as, “The basic concepts and fundamental principles of right human conduct” (businessdictionary). Strategic planning must add value to the business activities that will make companies successful in their industries. When ethics and social responsibility are imbedded into strategic planning and management embraces and supports them, it will permeate throughout the organization, and reflect in how the company does business and treats its customers and stakeholders. Profits and success will surely follow. Companies must be good neighbors in their communities by keeping their store and surrounding area clean and safe. The products they sell must also be environmental friendly. The work ethic in modern business seems to have changed, so companies must be prepared for unexpected challenges of unethical behavior. According to Mintzberg, Some kind of preparedness is better than waiting for possible dramatic ethical conflicts to happen” (Mintzberg, 2003 p. 299). Employees will make good decisions if they know
