He quotes that “future of all the American Republics is today in serious danger”. That is because and that is because we (America) cannot predict the time, place or method of our enemies attacks. He then begins to talk about America’s national policy quoting that “we strengthen the defense and the security of our own nation” by doing the second step of our national policy. In President Obama’s speech he say that all of America’s citizens should be able to live free from fear. Though he has the same thought as Roosevelt the fear has changed from war to terrorist attacks.
Also, again there was that subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) push for socialism to take over, and the war allowed the government to destroy the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World), a force they had fought with internally for many years. However, just before the declaration of war, the IWW newspaper wrote, “‘Capitalists of America, we will fight against you, not for you! Conscription! There is not a power in the world that can make the working class fight if they refuse,’” (Zinn 372). This changed my thinking in that before reading, I had
Adolf Hitler’s war on the Eastern as well as the Western fronts of Germany forced the Western Allies and Soviet Union to form an alliance to defeat Hitler and hence, banish the threat that he posed. Many call this alliance an unnatural alliance because the US and the USSR had underlying grievances against each other. With the end of the Second World War and the defeat of Nazi Germany, diplomatic relationship between these two countries only worsened because of their prewar grievances and differing ideologies leading to their split and the development of the Cold War. It is a popular belief amongst many historians that the Cold War started with the Bolshevik Movement and the formation of a Communist state in Russia and that it only intensified after the Second World War. Animosity did exist between the US and the USSR even before the war.
In 1950 the McCarran Internal Security Act passed and required communist organizations to publish their records, and register with the government. When the Soviets successfully detonated a nuclear weapon in 1949, it took America by surprise. The speed at which Soviet technology was advancing drew suspicion to a conspiracy that American atomic secrets were handed over to the Soviets. These fears were found to be true in 1950 and masterminded by members of the Communist Party Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. On April 5, 1951 the Rosenberg’s were found guilty and sentenced to death.
The nation’s security is a example of Communism shown through agents like Alger Hiss, who brought before HUAC on charges of being Russian spy. Whittaker Chambers was a member of the Communist party and a Soviet spy. Chambers had claimed that Hiss had given information to the Soviets which Alger Hiss was convicted of perjury and denying the communication between Chambers and
After the end of World War 1, a new fear gripped the world-Communism. The world viewed communism as a threat to democracy and there was an unspoken agreement that the world not allow its spread. This fear only worsened after World War 2 with the signing of the Alien Registration Act of 1940. This act required everyone who was not a legal American resident to fill a form stating their political beliefs. The
However, you shouldn't make the assumption that devotion to ideology was all that was behind Cold War animosity; countries tend to be more complaint trading partners with countries that share their political systems and both Stalin and the Cold War Era presidents in the US knew this. The tension eventually built, but no one wanted to go to actual war again after the colossal massacre of WWII, hence the term Cold War. 2. Describe and explain the ideological differences between the United Stated and the Soviet Union. In 1917, Russia became a communist country with an agenda of converting the world to communism.
In the midst of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, American code breakers were able to uncover information which suggested that the Soviets had infiltrated it. Julius Rosenberg and David Greenglass worked at Los Alamos and both were proved to be working for the Soviets.# David Greenglass was put on trial for conspiracy to commit espionage and spared his own life by giving a key testimony to convict Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Julius was found guilty of giving plans of the atomic bomb, and Ethel was found guilty of transcribing plans given to her by her brother David Greenglass, and both were charged for conspiracy to commit espionage against the United States. It was then, on June 19, 1953, that Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed
If the United States cannot respond to a threat near our own borders, why should Europeans or Asians believe that we're seriously concerned about threats to them? If the Soviets can assume that nothing short of an actual attack on the United States will provoke an American response, which ally, which friend will trust us then? (Reagan, 2012). This statement had to do with his concern over the events that were happening in Central America, which during this time had the Pro Soviet Sandinista government running Nicaragua which in had just ridded itself a previous dictatorship in 1979. This was also problematic because in 1981, Sandinista-supported Marxist guerrillas launched an offensive against the government of El Salvador, which was pro-American (Russell, 2010).
He charged that there were 205 communist spies in the state department who were selling out the United States. McCarthy warned that there were communist traitors in American government and society that were threatening to destroy the United States. He declared: "When a great democracy is destroyed, it will not be because of enemies from without, but rather because of enemies from within." McCarthy called for a "moral uprising" of Americans to drive these dangerous communists out of government and society. He also declared that the United States had lost ground in the world not as a result of foreign aggression, but “because of the traitorous actions of those who have been treated so well by this nation.” The corporate-controlled news media also shared the blame for McCarthy's ability to disseminate "great lies."
