Adolf Hitler’s war on the Eastern as well as the Western fronts of Germany forced the Western Allies and Soviet Union to form an alliance to defeat Hitler and hence, banish the threat that he posed. Many call this alliance an unnatural alliance because the US and the USSR had underlying grievances against each other. With the end of the Second World War and the defeat of Nazi Germany, diplomatic relationship between these two countries only worsened because of their prewar grievances and differing ideologies leading to their split and the development of the Cold War. It is a popular belief amongst many historians that the Cold War started with the Bolshevik Movement and the formation of a Communist state in Russia and that it only intensified after the Second World War. Animosity did exist between the US and the USSR even before the war. The West was hostile to the Russian Revolution in 1917, which officially marked the beginning of Bolshevik Russia. They were suspicious of the new system that promised to eradicate all classes in society and feared that communism would bring down capitalism-the spine of their existence. This hostility was even more aggravated when the West intervened in the Russian Civil War (1918-1920) on behalf of the White Army. Even though diplomatic relations were established between the US and the USSR in1933, they soon fell apart when Stalin signed the Non-Aggression Pact with Hitler in 1939. It was only the breaching of the Pact on the part of Hitler and his invasion of Western Russia that made the Western Allies and the USSR to form an alliance, albeit cautiously as the West was already suspicious of Stalin for having signed a pact with Hitler in the first place.
