Schenck v. United States (1919) Facts of the Case: When America entered WWI, Congress passed the Espionage Act of 1917, which said that during wartime obstructing the draft and trying to make soldiers disloyal or disobedient were crimes. Charles Schenck, who served as general secretary of the Socialist Party, was vehemently against the war. He mailed thousands of pamphlets to men who had been drafted into the armed forces. These pamphlets said that the government had no right to send American citizens to other countries to kill people. As a result, the government charged Schenck with conspiracy to violate the Espionage Act by attempting to cause insubordination in the military and to obstruct recruitment.
This is ironic because if in this society, if a war broke out, it would be the government and the officials who would pay the price, but in 1984, it is the citizens that are paying the price. It is also symbolic because it proves how effectively the government have manipulated the citizens. Even with the bombs dropping, the citizens know that they have no power and do not even make an effort to complain. Also, Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford were leaders of the Revolution are both symbolic and Ironic because they act as a last hope against Big Brother and they were once leaders, but became total opposite, which is an
Joseph McCarthy was a supporter of the HUAC. McCarthy was very determined to catch the Soviet spies, and to eliminate any communism in America. He thought it would destroy democracy in the US. McCarthy even harmed innocent Americans if that’s what it took to get rid of the communism in America. The HUAC tested Lionel Stander because he was a part of
America, Great Britain and the USSR have been working together as members of the Grand Alliance as an attempt to defeat Nazi Germany. Although they were working together, their relationships weren’t always friendly and there was many disagreements which is part of the reason the Grand Alliance broke down. America and Great Britain were Capitalists countries where as the USSR was a Communist country so there was disputes between all of the superpowers. The USA is to blame for the breakdown of the Grand Alliance for many reasons. After Roosevelt died Truman became the American president.
One major revelation was that he could not reach power by violence, and must go by the democratic process and enter into the Reichstag. This did not mean that Hitler would stop using violence to gain power however. Hitler's main opposition in the Reichstag were the communists, the communists had many seats in the Reichstag and had links with other smaller parties. The Communist Party's own methods were perhaps more violent than the Nazi's. The Red Fighting Force was an organisation of militant communists who beat people up and forced them to support the communist party.
A tough federal response smothered Klan terror in a wave of prosecutions. Martial law and the suspension of habeas corpus were necessary to remove the threat from South Carolina. In 1915 the Hollywood spectacular Birth of a Nation reframed historical events to give credence to the Klan’s conspiratorial interpretation.38 As the economic order changed, different visions of the future battled for power. Conspiracy was a prominent theme in the competition. Capitalists denounced radicals for scheming to overthrow the government and cited as proof events like the 1886 Haymarket Square bombing that left seven policemen dead.
voters asked wether or not the government should have the constitutional powers to ban the communist party also the persons accused are to prove their innocence rather than their guilt. Following the confessions of the multiple Americans on trial for treason and revealing the United States’ government secrets, McCarthyism was born. Senator McCarthy was so focused on keeping communism out of the United States; he had government officials and Hollywood’s “A” list interrogated to see if they supported communism and to see if they were Russian spies. I mean, even the wealthiest of them all at the time couldn’t get around these interrogations. Also, Senator McCarthy had full support of J. Edger Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Intelligence at that time in history. In Salem in 1962, power struggling leaders wanting to disperse of
McCarthyism and the Red Scare After World War 2, the United States feared that communism will spread throughout the world, even hit the United States. Joseph McCarthy came up with an idea called McCarthyism. McCarthyism is a practice of making false accusations against Americans with ties to communism. During this era many American’s were being accused of being communist. Arthur Miller brought this idea to his own book called The Crucible.
When a fire started in the Reichstag building, Hitler used it as a way to start series of terrorist acts against politicians he considered enemies (“Hitler, Adolf”). Hitler claimed that these politicians were part of a Communist plan. By influencing the public, Hitler gained special powers to “protect the nation against possible Communist acts of violence” (“Hitler, Adolf”). Hitler went a long way by being influential. Anyone that he didn’t want alive, didn’t have much of a chance to survive.
