The article briefly mentions that Hispanics and blacks had to wait longer in lines and had less ability to vote. A book titled “The Congressional Black Caucus, Minority Voting Rights, and the U.S. Supreme Court” talks about this issue and gives several explanations. One was that minority groups have jobs that are very demanding and require longer hours. This prevents people from waiting for longer periods of time in line. Another problem was that even though there are anti-discrimination policies, a slight differential treatment towards minorities is still present.
Do minorities and whites engage in self segregation? I agree with Beverly D. Tatum from the book “Taking Sides”. I think we do self-segregate and that is because of the society we are brought up in. In today’s modern society African Americans do not sit in the back of the bus or go to separate schools however there is still segregation. I think it is because of two basic reasons; firstly, as Tatum points out, one can relate better with peers of their own race because they too understand the difficulties of being a minority.
How It Feels To Be Colored Me Discussion and Writing Questions 1.) In my opinion, Hurston is trying to say that she’s not different from anyone else just because she’s colored. That just because people are different on the inside, that doesn’t mean they’re very different on the outside at all. I believe she’s also trying to show that slavery is something of the past, and that it’s already been dealt with. And that just because she is colored, she won’t let that limit her from what she is capable of doing in life.
Seemingly is the show gender neutral and more, the cast is multicultural and - racial. Women have seemingly been thrust into positions of power and equality with their male counterparts. Actually it’s far from that. While the women on the show possessing superpowers equal to that of their male counterparts, Heroes is far from being shamelessly sexist. Everything seems to be contemporary, where gender issues would not be a problem, but when the viewer should peel back the layers of the show, it would not take long to see that Heroes relies on traditional stereotypes in terms of the gender lines of protection.
However of those people errors may lie with the small time frame and time of day interviews occurred. The poll was completed in less than an hour and also at a somewhat late hour for a weeknight. Biases can occur here in that it’s possible for certain sects of the population to already be sleeping at this time. For example, elderly citizens and those with jobs tend to set earlier bedtimes than younger adults and those who are employed. This could bias any inferences about the population in that you’re only looking at only certain demographics across the potential republican voters.
Her aim was to gain allegiance from middle class white women but in this process she lost esteem from the women within her own race. She played into assertive ideals and clichés in order to be recognized. The author focused too much on gaining acceptance from white people instead of having self-assurance and understanding of possibly never being fully welcomed by her aggressors. It is one thing to desire equality, but when the basis of gaining equality requires degrading your own race, it is no longer equality of race nor mankind, but only gaining appreciation based on performance. McDougald thinks that the low class black women intrude as a hindrance for the entire black race and the few who have proven their dominant are still associated with ignorance and the signification of being a black woman.
Based on research I understand that White racial identity is frequently depicted as an avoidance racial category, which is considered to be an indistinguishable, but advantaged identity molded by years of repression of other nationalities other than whites. Being white has become equal with privilege and opportunity. Individuals who are white can really advantage in society. As young Americans we have not all been exposed to other races. I was raised in a predominantly African American surrounding, which only allowed me to be exposed to people of my own ethnicity.
immorally wrong 2. deserve to have the same opportunities If blacks are given equal rights to whites.....Well look at it this way if blacks are just now having freedom they expect to be just as free as whites, but they are not being treated as fairly b/c 1. poor working conditions and lower wages 2. More susceptible to committing crimes b/c it is caused by the strain of the social revolution however black crime declined as the African American population moved towards a more equal status The legacy of W.E.B. DuBois as a writer, thinker, and racial leader may well prove to be more durable than that of any other African American of the 20th
People feel an immediate bond with the Romps because they, too, are white, whereas they are unlikely to feel such a rapport with blacks, even if those persons were similar to them in class and behavior. The different reaction to the two groups is based mainly on class. Billy Romp has almost scholarly conception of the significance of speech and silence in making local residents feel comfortable. If you feel comfortable with people, it creates trust. Obtaining trust would involve achieving a high level of decency in people’s
Reflection on Diversity F.D. CCN By being enrolled in this class I gained a better understanding of diversity, from what it is to how involved it is in everyday life. Some of the particular subjects that stood out to me were majority vs. minority and the benefits of being diverse. I personally have been in both situations but was more so the minority despite growing up in a diverse town. However, by being the minority in a diverse community helped me relate to others who could have like the “other”.
