Reflection on Diversity F.D. CCN By being enrolled in this class I gained a better understanding of diversity, from what it is to how involved it is in everyday life. Some of the particular subjects that stood out to me were majority vs. minority and the benefits of being diverse. I personally have been in both situations but was more so the minority despite growing up in a diverse town. However, by being the minority in a diverse community helped me relate to others who could have like the “other”. One particular time I made such a connection was when I had my 18th birthday party, a debut. Through my debut I was able to feel the rare occasion of being part of the majority while my friends took the reverse role as the minority. In Filipino culture, a debut is similar to a quinceañera in Mexico. When a girl turns 18 she is then considered as a woman in society. The most common traditions in most debuts are a dance called a cotillion and the presentations of 18 candles and roses which my friends took part of. I remembered when I first told my friends of my debut and how I would be honored for them to take part of it they were very hesitant. For the most part, my friends were nervous about the numerous tasks they would have to do on top with not being familiar with my culture. After all the practices, explanations, and the final dress rehearsal, my friends were finally able to have a sense of what to do. During the whole process it was clear that my friends were the minority not only by number but by “power” as well. Commonly, when people think of majority and minority people think so based on numbers. However that isn’t always the case. I learned that the minority are “the ones regarded less than by the majority in regards to power, prestige, and privilege (Bell, 2007, p.67).
