Equality and Inclusion. 1.1 Explain what is meant by: -Diversity. Diversity aims to recognise, respect and value peoples differences to contribute and realise their full potential by promoting an inclusive culture for everone. Diversity literally means difference. When it is used as a contrast or addition to equality, it is about recognising individual as well as group differences, treating people as individuals, and placing positive value on diversity in the community and in the workforce. -Equality. Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favorably, specific to their needs, including areas of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age. Equality is about creating a fairer society, where everone can participate and has the oppurtunity to fulfill their potential' (DoH 2004). -Inclusion. Inclusion is a practice that ensures there are no barriers in place to stop people taking an active part in all areas of society and that they are not excluded because of illness or disability. We tend to develope different worlds, for example, separate workshops, education groups and living accomadation for people with mental health needs or disabilities and this in some way excludes that from mainstream society. We should have an inclusive society that everyone can be a part of. -Discrimination. Discrimination means we are treating people differently and unfairly because of disability, illness, age ,gender, sexual orientation, religion, beliefs or appearence. 1.2 This could occur by making a statement based on the group an individual belongs to and making the assumption that they may like that an activity based on that. for example because they are elderly they would like bingo or knitting activities, and if someone who is young and wears a hoodie they are going to mug
