Elia Kazan’s ‘On the Waterfront’, is a story of Terry Malloy’s ultimate journey of fulfilling his dreams on becoming a contender and becoming a man from a ‘bum’. Two of the most influential people, Father Barry and Edie Doyle constantly remind Terry to listen to his conscience. ‘On the Waterfront’ takes the audience on a journey through terry’s life, which gives them an insight into his life and dilemmas which he faces along the way. Terry’s redemption took time and was aided by the support of others. When Johnny Friendly’s gang murders his brother Charlie, Terry realizes the union corruption makes the decision to go against the union and make them pay, now that he’s felt the pain personally.
The father's protectiveness is very evident many times throughout the novel, however one of the most notable events was when a man threatens his son with a knife and the father shoots the man in the head. Although this action was probably necessary, the fathers downfall is his suspicion that everyone is their enemy. His father's paranoia causes them to move constantly from camp to camp, consequently, never getting the chance to make friends with anyone. His son, on the other hand, is much more sensitive and innocent. He feels very safe with his father but at the same time he questions some of his decisions.
Jurors #3 and #10 are the most hostile of the jurors. They believe deep down that this boy killed his father. They believe that everything they heard in the courtroom holds true and they don’t really want to see this kid live any longer. Juror #8 still had reasonable doubt about the murder. He doesn’t want to vote guilty until he has enough evidence that this boy did indeed kill his father.
At first limits his heroism, as Ender believes this is true, “like us they keep the little sucker till he’s six years old. When did you loose yours? You were three. I lost mine before I was five. He almost made it, little bastard little bugger” (Pg 10) though later in the book we see Ender using this as a way to enhance his heroism as he wants to prove his brother wrong.

By using strategy, the sniper figures out a way to fool the enemy and kills him. Saving his life by taking out another, felt so bad. With guilt, and loss of lust for the war, the sniper became curious of the identity he had killed. The climax of the whole story happens at the very end when the sniper finds out he killed his own brother. Though, the story’s ending is ironic due to the sniper recognizing that the enemy killed was his brother.
A major character in this story is Charles Trask. What motivates his actions is the fact that he thinks their father, Cyrus, loves his stepbrother more than him. An inner conflict that Charles has is jealousy. He would always beat Adam up when they were young teenagers but once Adam left for the Army, Charles realized that he actually missed him. Once Adam comes back, he tells Charles that he escaped from jail which makes Charles feel better about himself.
Hamlet’s speech reveals his in depth on the idea of suicide and death. He is passionate in finding a solution to end his misery to kill Claudius. He advices himself that he should calm down, confront to his mother of what Claudius has done wrong and ensure that he does nothing to hurt her. Hamlet feels empowered and motivated that the next time he encounters Claudius, he will kill him and avenge his father’s death. In my opinion, Hamlet is a young man that deeply loves his father and is severely affected by his death.
