Santa, the reindeer, the North Pole, toys, and elves; whenever you hear these words you think of Christmas time. But what if instead of Santa there were three kings? What if instead of reindeer there were camels and horses? Spanish speaking countries like Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Spain all celebrate a special day similar to Christmas called El Dia De Los Tres Reyes Magos. Translated in English that means “The Three Kings Day” or “The Three Wise Men”. The biggest festival is held in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Every year, the city throws a large festival at the Luis Muñoz Marin Park. Delectable food and drinks fill the aroma of the air, live music fills your eardrums, and little kids surround you everywhere. On some occasions, a number of lucky kids receive additional gifts. But the only thing the kids and parents are waiting for is for The Three Kings’ arrival. Juana Diaz is, unofficially, the hometown of The Three Kings in Puerto Rico. This is their prime location and that is where they start their journey. From there, they travel around the island making their appearance in towns. In all the places the kings visit, Old San Juan is the largest celebration on the island. Nonetheless, every holiday comes with its own set of family traditions. For example, a figurine of The Three Kings is placed as the centerpiece of the dinner table every year. There is also a nativity set that is placed under the Christmas tree with The Three Kings present bearing their gifts to Jesus. After the presents were opened, my family went to the festival in Ponce, Puerto Rico and awaited for the kings to arrive. I remember constantly asking, “Are they here yet? When are they coming? Are they on their way?” After anxiously waiting for what felt like four years, they finally arrived on their camels and horses; my heart dropped to my stomach. It was just like seeing Santa on his sleigh in a Christmas parade. Obviously they weren’t the real Three Kings, but as a kid I believed they were. After the festival was over, my family and I went back to my grandmother’s house and had our family party. It just so happened it was my grandmother’s responsibility to throw the family party that year, which is why we flew down.
