Oakar Johal Mrs. Davis AP English 11/18/13 Education is the key to all freedom. When greek philosopher Epictetus says “we must not believe the many, who say that only free people ought to be educated. But we should rather believe the philosophers who say that only the educated are free” I agree with him because anybody can be educated. Education opens up infinite possibilities in life. The power of education can set anybody free. Education is a key part to life. The power of education can make somebody understand things in different ways. Instead of just having tunnel vision they can discover different conclusions without experiencing them. From the past to present the person who is the most educated was the one who had the most opportunities in the future and also was seen as the more dominant one out of say a group of people. Education can set anybody free to pursue their dreams. High school is the key to the lock, once somebody has earned this piece of paper that “we” call a diploma sets the students free to pursue their dreams. That little piece of paper can make the biggest difference in life. The littlest things can change how we are seen as a person. For example Frederick Douglass was a slave, but he took the time to be educated and started asking questions about why the whites were doing what they were doing. Because Frederick Douglass was a slave he was seen to be a piece of property and not human in his master’s eyes, this was wrong! In the past slaves were not to be educated, it was against the law to educate a slave. Whites were scared of the power that education could offer the slaves. Education offers POWER.
