SHOULD STUDENTS BE ALLOWED TO WEAR THEIR OWN CLOTHES TO PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS? It is compulsory for Malaysian’s primary and secondary school students to obey the dressing code in which it means they are not allowed to wear their own clothes to school. The issue here is some countries in this world do allow their primary and secondary school student to wear their own clothes. But the question is which one is the best policy that should be used for the sake of our students? In my opinion, I would say students should not be allowed to wear their own clothes to school. There are a few reasons to support my stand. Firstly in the view of teachers, they are responsible to build the discipline value among students. So, dressing code is actually one of the methods in the discipline building. By setting up the dressing code, students are trained to respect the rules and other people. Let’s take an example if there is no dress code in school, students would wear anything to school, neglecting the sensitivity and culture of other students. Students may wear inappropriate clothes which will distract others. In other side, if dressing code is used, students will look smart in their school uniform. It is easier for the teachers to train the students. In this range of age, students still need the guidance and they should not be given the ‘freedom’ yet. Next in the view of students itself, they are not mature enough to be given the ‘freedom’. Primary and secondary school students are in the adolescence phase. This means that they have high curiosity in anything. So it is very important to teach them to follow the rules by setting up the dress code. For example, if there is no dress code students will not get use to rules. So they will take this as a simple matter in life. Dress code is very important to teach them how important discipline is.
