He has the self determination to challenge himself. By the time the talent show came around many participants arrived and presented their talents they brought from their countries and some were unique and very interesting. I recall waiting for Steven to come on, he was the last performer. I remember the room got silent as our fellow classmates saw the “quiet kid” get onto the stage, with his red shirt, khaki pants, and messy hair. I heard laughing and giggling as they all made fun of him, he was not afraid or embarrassed he simply shut the world out, one of his many talents.
Chris had many problems growing up he thrived off of his peers laughter and enjoyment but his biggest priority was making his dad proud which caused him so much grief and psychological problems through his life. Chris’s siblings as well as Chris would always fight for their father’s acceptance whether it was in academics or athletics. Since Chris was the middle child he was never the favorite growing up, Chris always looked for attention every day on the bus he would sing specific songs based off of his comedic attitude that day. All Chris cared about was making people laugh that was his life’s motive.
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is a film, directed by Lasse Hallström it takes place in the monotonous town of Endora, Iowa where there’s not a whole lot to do. Gilbert is a young man who wants nothing more than to leave and pursue something bigger. Gilbert is tied down due to his family who he must help, as they are in quite a struggle as it is. Gilberts brother, Arnie is almost eighteen and suffers from a mental disability. Gilbert must constantly watch Arnie so as to make sure he does not get into any trouble, or cause trouble for anyone else.

He has many cheerful men with him, and they live like Robin Hood and his outlaws. People say that new batches of young men flock there every day, and that they all pass the time without a care, like people did in the Golden Age.
For instance, while hunting, Jack came alive in the austere ominousness of the forest and jumped off the page, making every violent and vigorous movement almost instinctively. ”Jack was bent double… with his nose only a few inches from the humid earth…[he] breathed gently with flared nostrils…opened his eyes, that with frustration, seemed bolting and nearly mad” (Golding 48). Jack had become, uncannily, one with nature. This image evokes in the reader, the adjacency of the newly evolved Jack and a primitive almost pre-human creature. At this point, Golding has developed Jack as a proselytistic character who has converted into the forest life.
What makes it so good is the interaction between characters and the unique language style. The family and the characters in What's Eating Gilbert Grape might be strange, but they seem like real characters with real emotions, for the author successfully gives each of them a vivid depiction. Arnie is about to turn eighteen, but mentally, he is like a five-year-old. He always has traces of some food on his face, and when he feels like it, he climbs up on the water tower, or catches grasshoppers and chops off their heads. He never listens to his brother or sister, and always makes trouble for them.

He is complicit in Dwight’s attempt to lure Rosemary; he finds that they are too deeply entwined to stop the prevent carnage. Dwight’s attempts to “improve” Toby and turn him into a “man”, highlight the extreme vulnerability and sense of powerlessness that pervade many of the surrogate father figures in the novel. Dwight constantly sets him up for ridicule. For example, he makes him “shuck” horse chestnuts without gloves, which is an incredibly difficult task. His fingers become covered with a yellow stain and people think that he is hygienically unclean.
They include having many failures, not having any close friends, and the loss of his younger brother Allie. Since his many failures at school, Holden has been in a downward spiral that will eventually lead to his mental break down. Not being able to talk to any close friends makes Holden’s depression much worse. Holden thinks that he should be dead instead of his brother Allie which does not help with his depression. If Holden’s parents had let him go to a school near his apartment he might have been able to establish a few long term relationships.
We are introduced from the beginning of Raymond Carver’s Cathedral to a man that seems to be perturbed and agitated. The husband “ wasn’t enthusiastic about [Robert] visit, he was no one [he] knew. And his being blind bothered [him].” (20) He is uninterested in the relationship that Robert has with his wife. (21) The only reason he knows any thing about Robert is because she told him, he didn’t ask and didn’t care to know. We see how selfish and self centered the narrator is as he has thoughts of, “this blind man” “coming to sleep in [his] house” and telling his wife “maybe [he] could take him bowling” (22).
