The Depression was recorded to have decreased the marriage rate which helped lead to a decline in the birth rate. It is documented to be the first time in American history that the birth rate dropped below replacement level (Mintz & McNeil, 2014). An increase in illness and disease occurred from poor living conditions and lack of income. Unemployment rates skyrocketed which led to an increase in eviction rates and homelessness. Men were
nor adrenaline and serotonin mainly. These neurotransmitters act like chemical messages in the nervous systems and are known to be active in parts of the brain associated with reward and punishment. They help to regulate the hypothalamus which is involved in sleep appetite , sexuality and physical movement., and these key areas are affected in depressive disorders. Support for this explanation has come from drug therapy. Anti depressants such as MAOI’s which increase the available amount of nor adrenaline in the brain, were found to be effective for elevating the symptoms of depression.
The hippocampus on the other side is responsible for the production of corticosteroids (chemicals that produce physiological responses to stimuli). How the mind creates memories is controlled by the hippocampus. So as to work efficiently, the amygdala and the hippocampus rely on each other greatly. The amygdala regulates the responses to stimuli and the hippocampus uses these responses in the formation of both short-term and long-term memories. Damage to the amygdala or hippocampus causes loss of emotions and memory respectively.
The biological approach believes that treatment should be physical and one of its main treatments is drug treatment. It assumes that abnormality is caused by a chemical imbalance, meaning too much or too little of a neurotransmitter. Drug treatment works by increasing or decreasing levels of neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that transmit impulses across the microscopic gaps between nerve cells called synapses. Changes in the brain's neurotransmitter systems lead to changes in moods, feelings, perception and behaviour. Some drugs work by increasing the levels of neurotransmitter as low levels of serotonin are thought to cause depression so SSRI drugs such as Prozac are used to block the re-uptake pump in the synapse.
Methamphetamine use shows how drugs can alter neurotransmitter function and thus perception of reality. Their
A good example of a neurotransmitter that is excitatory is known as acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that helps transmit the impulses between the motor neurons that are responsible for controlling muscles. A good example of a neurotransmitter that is inhibitory is called dopamine. Dopamine will inhibit the nerve impulses in the motor neurons. For a person to have controlled voluntary muscle movement, then the combination of dopamine and acetylcholine is necessary.
Phobias and Addictions Your Name PSY/300 - General Psychology University of Phoenix Carlton Bowden As humans, just as any other living organisms, it is essential to learn how to guide our behaviors in order to survive and adapt to our environment. Our behaviors are formed by various factors that most may not be even aware of such as our genetics, culture, our environment, or by a form of conditioning. Although each one of these factors takes a role in shaping our behaviors, we will focus on conditioning and the phobias and addictions that can be portrayed as a result of the conditioning; in addition, extinction through conditioning will be discussed. Have you ever been reminded of a special someone
Some of the possible effects that are thought to be caused by smoking marijuana are forgetfulness, and reduced concentration. Because smoking marijuana is thought to tilt the balance of chemicals in the brain, it is said to regulate mood, appetite, energy, and attention. It also reduces logical thinking and calculation skills, and can impair a persons ability to perform a complex task, like driving a car. The reason for concern about long-term risks is because marijuana causes a build up of THC metabolites, and they stay in the fatty tissue of the human body for three to five days, and weeks in heavy
It is named due to its long duration, as it began in 1929 and didn’t end until mid-1941—the start of WWII. It is also named due to the severity of decline it caused. Employment was already low, and unfortunately, only started to drop. The Great Depression had many causes for its start. Unequal distribution of wealth in 1920, high tariffs and war debts, overproduction in industry and agriculture, and the stock market crash are just a few of the reasons that will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
Stephen Killen 9367675 Chemistry 208 Group 7 November 9th, 2010 Antidepressants Introduction Depression is a state of sadness that may be accompanied by feelings of low self esteem, emptiness, hopelessness etc. It interferes with a person’s day to day life and makes even the most basic activities appear tedious. There are several types of depressive disorders but the most common one is major depressive disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health major depressive disorder is the “combination of symptoms that interfere in a person’s ability to work, eat, study, sleep, and enjoy once pleasurable activities.” (1). Depression does not last for a determinate amount of time,
