Nurses need to review the disaster history of their community, as well as how past disasters have affected the community’s health care delivery system (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). It is important for nurses to understand and gain the competencies necessary to respond in times of disasters before disaster strikes. The preparedness competencies should focus on personal preparedness, understanding roles, becoming acquainted with the health department’s disaster plan and communication equipment appropriate for disaster situations (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). Disaster and mass casualty drills and exercises are extremely valuable components of preparedness that can give nurses and other personnel opportunities to improve plans. Nurses should also identify limits to their own knowledge/skill/authority and identify key resources for referring situations that exceed those limits.
Community Health Nursing Emergency Response 725.8.8 Stefanie Pipia Western Governors University April 18, 2014 Disaster in Franklin County In the event of a disaster there are many people with various roles needed to respond and meet the needs of the community affected. The role of major public health personnel is to assess the incident for immediate health needs, severity of health needs and the potential health risks of the community. The public health personnel have specific roles, responsibilities and functions to carry out during the disaster to identify, manage and minimize aftermath. The public health nurse can assess for immediate health needs related to injury and disability. They can identify and provide health related education to reduce the health risks related to the disaster as well as prevention of secondary conditions.
Trosack is to be discharged home without formal support the family must be made aware of their vital role in caring for Mr. Trosack. Mr. Trosack will require daily visits from family members and they must be available by phone in case unexpected needs arise. Mr. Trosack will need someone to obtain his medications and see that he is taking them properly. They will also need to ensure Mr. Trosack is checking his blood sugars and blood pressures regularly and that the levels are within normal limits. They will also need to monitor for any side effects or adverse reactions to his medications and report them to his physician as needed.
B) The storing of medication whilst out on a day trip should be as the labelling states. Usually a large dry box is brought with various labelled medication/ medications in it for various service users and their specific medical needs. C) A record of all dosage and medicines that are consumed must be taken at the time of consumption during the day. A(vii) A) It is important that all staff is trained to the highest quality, when learning about first aid and emergency first aid. In case of an emergency that happens outdoors where there is more danger of falling, a nurse should always be on hand to attend the injured resident.
RTT Task 1 Shawna Setzer Western Governors University Nursing-Sensitive Indicators In the given scenario involving Mr. J’s hospital stay it is important to integrate nursing- sensitive indicators in delivering quality patient care. Every patient has the right to receive the appropriate care without causing harm. Mr. J was starting to develop pressure sores related to being in restraints, and when his daughter pointed out the areas to the CNA she didn’t realize the severity of the problem and report them to another care giver to assess the red areas. The CNA also did not reposition Mr. J onto his side to relieve pressure to that area of the body. Nursing indicators such as education on unnecessary use of restraints and not repositioning the patient every two hours, are failures to deliver quality care.
Role of Public Health Personnel The role of public health personnel is to maintain the physical and emotional safety of individuals throughout the community affected by the storm. Those in the Public Health Department are responsible for ensuring the citizens of Franklin County have all the basic necessities for survival, such as clean water, food, shelter, and necessary medications. Because of the varying needs of the community, the Public Health Department is also responsible for maintaining and disseminating up-to-date information on how to obtain help, how to acquire the basic necessities, and health hazards/concerns. The public health nurse assures these needs and concerns are met within her scope of nursing practice, using her assessment and prioritization skills. While the public health nurse is assessing the needs of those affected, other members of the Public Health Department maintain operations and assume any jobs that fall outside of the nursing scope of practice utilizing each individual’s skills: the health educator is able to draft concise and easily understood directions relating to maintaining health and directing those displaced to the nearest shelter; the department bookkeeper maintains the financial records during the disaster operations; the receptionist uses her connections with vendors and general people skills to obtain what is needed to run the department; the epidemiologist’s analytical approach and organized thinking is essential in mapping
The plan must address who is to perform specific duties during the recovery period. These people must be selected very carefully, alternates identified, and plans should be documented to train and test those individuals in the performance of their duties. * Review and update the current contingency plan for the hospital to ensure that it is flexible in order to respond to any type of internal or external disaster including nuclear, biological, and chemical terrorist threats. Update the current contingency plan to ensure that it outlines a chain of task delegation and communication to be activated by the upper level medical services supervisor on-site following notification from the administrator on call that emergency procedures are to be implemented (see Table A). * Conduct a business impact analysis to identify and prioritize critical systems, business processes, and components.
Another issue would be Mrs. O’Neill’s poor hearing. I would, as her case manager, talk to her about her need for hearing aids and try to dispel her fears or reasons of not wanting to use them. Without proper hearing I believe she is at risk for injury due to not hearing fire alarms and proper warnings in her home and when she is outside. Another very important issue is the clutter in her house. The nurse needs to go over with Mrs. O’Neill and her family about the safety issues in her house.
* The nurse will be responsible for all medical care, such as withdrawal from drugs, administrating appropriate medications, and any other medical care that would be needed. * The social worker will be responsible for connecting the residents with the resources they will need. This includes finding permanent housing, getting health insurance, finding a job or education training for a job, rehabilitation, drug and alcohol treatment, VA benefits if a veteran, mental health screening, and any other social services that may be
• NPSG.14.01.01: This goal states that health care providers need to assess and reassess every patient’s risk for pressure ulcers and then implement changes to protect them from getting these pressure ulcers. Each health care provider should also be taught how to identify risks and how to take action against those risks. Again, this is important because it is our job to protect our patients from
