Our community also has proportionately more homeless people than 33 other cities surveyed by the 2004 U.S. Conference of Mayors. Our mission is to provide shelter, meals, and support services to individuals and families without homes. New Mercies Open Arms is a cost efficient, effective, and replicable community response to homelessness. The primary demand for homeless services is a constant need. Fully 50% of Gwinnett County estimated at 7,100 homeless and 35% of the homeless people are disabled. Due to their severe disabilities and limited incomes, disabled adults have an extremely difficult time securing permanent housing in the competitive market. Ending homelessness for disabled people means building permanent, affordable housing specifically designed to meet their various needs. This group represents some of the most vulnerable people in our community and, when left on the streets, they represent significant expense to local taxpayers. We have specific outcomes that we are anticipating at this beginning stage and changes may occur once new staff is hired to direct the project. Our board of directors is enthusiastic about this program and eager to launch it in an effort to be the most wide-ranging and culturally competent center for disabled and mentally ill adults in all of our communities that need these
