Merck’s Risky Bet on Research 1. How would you describe Kenneth Frazier’s personality? I would say Kenneth Frazier’s personality would be of a dedicated, hard working human being. A person that can graduate at an age of when I would still be in jr. high is a big deal to me. To not only graduate at a young age, but to be accepted into college that young is big. To put the cherry on top, the college would be Harvard. You already know he is a hard, dedicated guy if he has succeeded in these categories. He had his own company and usually people accept failure and try to go through the motions of being an owner, but he did the exact opposite. Think about it, if you work to get the feel of being accomplished, then how hard do you think you would work to get things done? I work hard with a steady pace because I know when I am finished, I can relax and feel happy about what I have done. You have to be wise with your decision making when it comes to companies and what kind of product you produce and sell. Frazier does an excellent job of this and never gets greedy with it. If you do it the right way, the right things will come your way. Last but not least would be having self-respect. You have to have this to be able to succeed with anything in life. If you know a product is not correct, you have to have enough self-respect and discipline to do what is right with it. That is exactly what he does. 3. Which instrumental values do you think might be especially important to him? The instrumental values that would be important to him would be capable, courageous, being honest, independent, and being responsible. Most of these values tie together in many different ways. Either with using/selling a product or to the extent of dealing with co-workers and customers. Usually most leaders are focused on the bottom line, but not this guy. With Merck, he was more focused on the product he was selling, trying to make sure it was 100% satisfactory. If
