Date Rape, a New Cultural Epidemic 12/04/10 Prof. Larres Sociology Date rape is now more common amongst the age group of 18 - 24, especially on college campuses. The following facts on rape, its victims, the drugs used, how to determine if its rape and helpful tips for prevention, is to help separate the facts from the myths about date rape amongst college students, and people in general no matter age, gender, or situation. Knowledge and awareness can help prevent date rape even if it’s only one person at a time. When one hears the word "rape" the image of a stranger lurking in the shadows and jumping out from behind a tree usually comes to mind. Being raped is a very traumatic experience and can have many psychological and physical effects on the victim. The outcome and traumatic effects of a date rape can last for months, even years and treatment is usually required not just a hospital visit. The hardest part for the victim is often the aftermath when the victim must take in what happened, accept it, and readjust. After the assault, the first few days the victim enters what is known as the acute or crisis phase. In this phase the victim struggles with the realization of what has happened, that they have been raped, and they slowly begin to accept it. However this makes their feelings turn into revenge and anger toward the rapist, or sometimes they may become angry with themselves. They often may begin to question how they could have let it happen and most often place the blame on themselves. These feelings tend to die down however most seem to hold them all on the inside afterwards causing a lot of psychological pain. Generally, rape survivors report feeling powerless, shock, guilt, depression, anxiety, shame, embarrassment, and disbelief during this phase. However, they may have great difficulty getting in touch with these feelings or expressing them to others (Mufson, Pg 105). Next, the victim enters what is known as the disorientation phase. In addition to psychological effects of date rape, there are possible physical problems that call for medical attention. When a rape victim receives medical attention, the doctor will typically check for tears in the genital area and/or vaginal lining, any other injuries received during the attack such as scratches, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. Clearly, the effects of date rape are very severe and long lasting. (Mufson 101-110). However, with the correct course of action, doctor visits, and friends and family’s support, it helps make it easier for victims to overcome any traumatic experiences that may have been part of the harm caused by a date
