Safeguarding is about much more than just protecting children from direct abuse. Any and all services that work with children and young people has a wide rrole than simply protecting them from neglect and abuse. A big part of safeguarding to ensuring the protection from harm or abuse to children and ensuring their safety at the setting and at home. Also asking sure that all staff members that work with children know what to do if there is a suspicion of abuse happening and they know what to do next. Also supporting and promoting the wellbeing of children and young people and ensuring that this is being promoted in and out the setting to all children and young people.
I make sure I go by all these in my work role so I know I’m safeguarding the children to the best of my ability. Observing and assessing children’s development is essential so you are alert to anything that is not expected of that child at their development, we should also keep parents/careers up to date. Duty of care contributes to the safeguarding contributes to the safeguarding or protection of individuals by protecting them from any harm weather it’s physical or psychological. IN our nursery we safeguard children by * Setting clear boundaries for children’s behaviour and using strategies to discourage behaviour which could harm others. We do this according to their developmental stage.
A child’s development will be monitored and ensures a healthy progression during their early years. By having partnerships in place and interacting with them on a regular basis, if needed, allows the child’s safety to remain a priority. It also helps the child’s parents to have access to all of the services and support they may need for their child. By understanding the importance of working with partnerships, allows for the protection and security to be maintained, their development to be monitored and controlled and to safeguard their general wellbeing. However recognising and knowing when or where to use these services are the key to safe guarding the child or young person’s wellbeing.
CYP 3.3 Task 3 It is important that school and further education provide a safe enviroment for a child or young person to learn and thrive. This is only possible when theier health , safety and wellbeing is not being compromised. Education is important for a person to flourish and empower them to achieve a life outside of poverty and sometimes away from harm. To do this we need to follow policies and procedures that are in place to protect children and young people , and the adults who work with them. All adults with whom have contact with the children should be CRB checks, this checks and criminal records and background.
In every work role, to have a duty of care means to exercise a reasonable degree of attention and caution in order to avoid negligence which would lead to harm to others. Vigilance and attention are very important in keeping the children safe as they develop. Children and young people do not have the ability to care for themselves because they have not yet developed their physical and cognitive skills, so they need care from the adults around them. The younger and more vulnerable the child is, the greater the duty of care towards them. This means that the children that are in your care need the appropriate attention in order to make them feel safe and protected.
1.2 Relationship building is important when working with children and young people. The way this is done is by being a positive role model. The young person must feel comfortable when I am helping/supporting the young person with work. When working with children I have to make sure that when working with then that I use easy to understand words. Towards children I must show a caring approach and listen to them when they are asking me question and make eye contact so they know that I am listening to them.
2.2 Roles and responsibilities when keeping children safe All governors and staff have a shared responsibility to safeguard children. They all have to be familiar with and follow setting’s procedures and protocols for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children. However, there are certain designated persons in school with more specific roles and responsibilities, who must be contact to express concerns about a child’s welfare. All Staff and Volunteers To know how to work with the policy/procedures of the setting To know when and how to respond to when concern are raised To appreciate the guidance of the relevant Local Safeguarding Children Board To supervise children within set ratios To observe and monitor children to make sure they grown up in confidence To work as a part of professional team To monitor children health and general well- being To be a role model of positive behavior To be suitable qualified with full DBS clearance Protect children from harm from Internet/social media etc. Class teacher To work as a key person and actively engage with family in order to develop positive relationships and develop trust To maintain attendance record to maintain safe collection procedure for children The Designated Person for Child Protection (DPCP): has knowledge and skills for recognising and acting upon Child Protection concerns.
Boundaries are there to guide children and young people’s behaviour in the setting and it is very important for all staffs to consistently apply these boundaries fairly. Behaviour is learnt from what we see others do or say, so, it is very important for the staff to watch children closely and make sure that they apply the boundaries at all times. The importance of staffs applying the rules and boundaries are: It helps children and people to know what is right from wrong. For example, when a child knows what is right from wrong, or what is acceptable and what is not, then they will be able to do the right thing most of the time. If they know jumping is not allowed in the setting then they are going to behave accordingly.
3. Be able to support children and young people to assess and manage risk 4.1. Outline the importance of taking a balanced approach to risk Management It is clear that legislation, policies and procedures play an important role in keeping children and young people safe while in the care of responsible adults. Health and Safety legislation is pivotal in this, although some have agued that the level of policy, in terms of the reach into the everyday lives of children and young people, has led to a risk averse society (Beck, U. 1992; Huntington, R. 2004).
CU1523 Working together for the Benefit of Children and Young People 1. Understand integrated and multi-agency working 1.1 Explain the importance of multi-agency working and integrated working * As an early years setting we have a responsibility to help the children in out care achieve the ‘every child matters’. To be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve. * Team work with outside professionals is imminent to our work practises and I feel that integrating will help us achieve the outcome that we would like for our children and this will help them in their development going forward. This is an integral requirement of the eyfs.
