Johnny Belmontez 11/18/2013 Thought Essay #2 The article I choose is titled, “Cutting back on ethnic studies” which was written by various publishers from the Los Angeles Times . In this article the authors focus on Cal state university systems cutting down on ethnic studies program due to budget and enrollment issues. In this article the authors are pushing for the issue to save ethnic study programs and expand these studies amongst universities. One of the contributors believes that, “Awareness of the cultures of others is a path to understanding and a way to increase our solidarity in a nation of increasing diversity” (Allen Manzano). Two speakers are Joseph Lea and Allen J. Manzano who both are authors that are contributing their opinion and knowledge towards the argument. The other speaker is Jini Cockroft who is a professor for the English department at CSUDH which shows her credibility toward the topic at hand. Each speaker plays a particular role and contribute a certain aspect toward the argument. Joseph Lea gives an inside perspective and opens up the argument in the article. He implies that critics are unhappy toward the cut of ethnic studies programs amongst cal state universities but at the same time gives an alternate perspective toward the argument. Which I will elaborate more on later in my essay. Jini Cockroft provides a solution which serves as a common place within the argument, and Allen J. Manzano expand on the basis that ethnic studies program serve a crucial role for identifying awareness of other cultures in a nation where diversity is increasing. In conclusion the authors hopes that as a reader I will be able to understand the importance ethnic studies departments serve and that by cutting back on these programs can be crucial toward the unified growth of our
