al Cultural Properties of Oceania Chapter 11 By: Leanna Burns April 22, 2012 Figure 1 Figure [ 1 ] Oceania is located in Southeast Asia, and is made up of the country Australia as well as other smaller surrounding countries. Some countries incorporated in Oceania are Fiji, Palau, Guam, Tonga, and Nauru. As presented in Figure one, Australia is the largest land mass or continent that is surrounded by hundreds of islands so small that they don’t show visibly on the map. Australia being the smallest continent holds the least amount of people. The population size of Oceania is as small as some larger states in the United States. According to a resourceful text written on Wikipedia, as of April 22, 2012 Australia is estimated to be 22, 884,295 in population. That puts them in fiftieth place as far as the most populous countries (Demographics of Australia). Oceania’s overall population in reference to 2010 was 36 million. Its major religions include Christianity and diverse forms of indigenous religion rituals that vary according to country (World Regions). Great European influence on Oceania came about in the mid 1700’s. They began to move throughout Australia establishing colonies and world trade regions spreading through the pacific islands. Penal Colonies were established by the British to enforce territorial claims and provide cheap labor for natural and economic development. The Spanish and Portuguese controlled Guam, while the Dutch claimed areas west and south of Australia’s coast. 1901 was when Australia became politically independent but a lot of the cultural and traditional values of the Europeans are still alive in the region establishing religion and social differences (World Regions).
