The smell isn’t good but that’s nothing compared with the feel of all those serverd nostrils and lips and ears between your fingers”. This graphic image gives us a glance into the teenagers working lives, their arms are “slick” in blood and guts, this is not a job that they enjoy. We see an arrogant side to the narrator on page 4, “To be honest hes not my sort of bloke at all, but somehow he’s my best friend”, he comes across like he feel’s superior to Biggie, as if he owes his friendship to Biggie. The narrator shows us that there is a lot of loyalty between the two boys, on page 6 he states “Biggie’s not the brightest crayon in the box but he’s the most loyal person I know”, this leads us to belive that Biggie is unintelligent, not the most cleverest person. The narrator goes on to say that “I made him look brighter than he was”, this was done out of loyalty, the narrator was trying to help but it actually ended up wih Biggie and himself failing thier exams they “fried”.
In The Outsiders, there are two types of people: “the west side rich kids” (p.2) and the “Socs” who are the poorer, tougher east side greasers. Ponyboy curtis and his brothers Darry and Sodapop live on the poor side of town and this causes them a lot of trouble. In spite of his troubles, Ponyboy grows as a character and sees that lifestyle distinction doesn't matter as much as he once thought. For this and many other reasons such as his individuality and his interactions with other characters, Ponyboy curtis is the most noteworthy character is S.E Hinton’s novel, The Outsiders. Cocaine Kids showed how society views most drug dealer, with stereotyping them as gangsters with big gold rope necklaces, fresh kicks, and nice cars. It was a bigger chance that the Cocaine Kids would get caught because of where they lived, the areas that they stayed in promoted drug use. There was more of a risk of being caught for drug dealing that is why certain extensive procedures were followed in Cocaine Kids. It was to the degree of the market almost having its own “miniature society with institutions, laws, morality, language codes in behaviors of its own.” (Williams, pg.2). A person would think people with money would be looked down upon because they buy these illegal drugs but there is less stigmatizing because they have disposable money.
I believe because we have such a informal market, there will always be the rich and the poor. The poor will look to people who have money and what seems to be a better life. It does not help at all that due to today’s mass media, such as T.V. videogames, and movies, this entire media emphasizes violence, money and illegal activity. Hinton usually writes her stories in the first person, to reinforce the strong individual identities of her characters. Her other stories include Tex, about a teenager who loves
Nevertheless, not always do people get influenced negatively into turning to gangs and making bad choices. Thinking about the gangster environment and about the people that have lived or live in such surroundings you may think that it’s not as bad as it looks or sounds like, but in most cases the people get dragged into situations that force them into joining gangs for protection; people have been impacted by the environment that they live in. They make their own choices, often leading them through several traumatizing events that might make them change. I believe that with a good education our youth will notice all the pointless violence and wasted futures that have been around; the more education one gets not only does it enrich the person who is devoting their life for education but it also enriches their families, communities, neighborhood’s future as well as it does for them. Environment has a lot to do with the choices that people make but thanks to knowledge people decide the path they want to take.
