A Day at the Cemetery 15 August 1862 Union troops led by Major Emory S. Foster, attacked the Confederate troops led by Colonel Vard Cockrell near Lone Jack, Missouri. The battle was fought on the eve of that night till late the next day. The battle raged through the town virtually destroying it. The Union soldiers fought with all their might believing that the undisciplined Confederates would not hold them prisoners if they were captured. The battle concluded with the Confederates winning while the Union soldiers retreated to Lexington, Missouri. The dates range from the late 1890s up to the mid 1900s. These tombstones were for soldiers along with their loved ones whom died during the era’s of World Wars I and II. The admiration and respect for this cemetery rises once more. The cemetery reminds me of the time I visited Arlington cemetery in Washington D.C. ; only to an extremely smaller scale and no eternal flame, of course. The tombstones showed signs of wear from the rough weather conditions here in Missouri, but they were still in better condition than the gravestones in the Civil War memorial. Turning my attention away from the cemetery I look out into the Lone Jack Museum Park. I see the gravel parking lot empty because the museum is closed today. I see the magnificent old trees littered in the park. One particular tree that sticks out is the Black Jack tree. That was a local landmark in the area giving the town Lone Jack it’s name, “the Lone Black Jack Tree”, hence “the Lone Jack” became a city in 1841.
