Monologue: Crassus I was generally thought of as being a terrible man, who would manipulate people in order to further my own power or to increase my vast wealth. However, like him or hate him, I was an influential man in both the militaristic and political worlds. I was known to walk over anyone I could to get access to more wealth. I was probably one of the wealthiest men in history, through my ability to make money off people using my connections. my family had political connections, as my father was a censor, a position in the Roman government. This was until my father and brother were slain, causing me to go hide in a seaside cave for 8 months. When I came out I began my military and political career, which would guide the rest of my life. While supplying a force of soldiers under my command, I once said, "God forbid, that any Roman should think that too little which is enough to keep him alive and well.1" This seems pretty contrasting to how I lived as I was an extremely wealthy man. I started with 300 talents of silver, an already impressive amount, but by the end of my life, I was worth an estimated 7,100 talents. This included large amounts of land, and several silver mines. However, this wealth was not all obtained through “fair” methods. Amongst the many things I was infamous for, one of the main points would be my greed. One example of this greed was that I would try to sell fire insurance to citizens, who would often turn it down. If this was the case, these people's homes would suddenly catch fire soon after. If the insurance was refused again, the fire department would never show up. After the house burnt down I would offer the owners a fraction of the price, and owners were willing to part with for little or nothing, so that eventually I had bought up most of Rome at some point or other2.
