Counseling Theory Spiritual Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy Keri L. Sammons Liberty University Abstract A personal theory of counseling incorporates the worldview and professional position of the counselor. A theory should be designed in a way that meets the needs of the client in a gentle and accommodating way. The theory described is fashioned from Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and the beliefs of the Christian counselor. The intent of this theory is to develop counseling process that includes a scientifically based theory that is consistent with biblical values. The personal theory of the counselor is that the integration of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Christian beliefs will lead not only to psychological healing and change but, also to spiritual healing. Our happiness is diverted only because of our view of the unhappy events we incur. It is our core beliefs that determine how our emotions and thoughts perceive events in our life. This belief-focused therapy combined with guidance through scripture is an approach to change and healing of irrational beliefs. Philosophical Assumptions and Key Concepts The concept of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy is anchored around the idea that an individual’s perspective of a set of events is what guides their thoughts and beliefs. An individual’s beliefs can be rational, self-helping and guiding or they can be irrational, demanding and unrealistic (Murdock, 2009). REBT uses an ABCDE model to eliminate irrational thinking.
