midterm Family The book "Family" has reflected the history of slavery in America. In the book, Clora is a mother of six children with a slave master, in which her three children and adult survivors. Clora has committed suicide and killed her slave master like her mother did at first. She has lived as narrator and lived through her favorite daughter, Always. Unlike her mother, Always try and find ways to survived and destroy the slavery of America at that time.
Most of them were skinny and look very unhealthy their clothes look like they were made from rags it was just dreadful. I was disgusted by their appearances. The language they spoke was so different from ours I could hardly understand it. It were many slaves that we had no choice but to put them on deck which by the way is the worst part of the ship to stay. As days grew longer and the nights grew more mournful the weather started to get really bad.
There was no law about it; but the whites reported it round among themselves, that if a note was heard, they should have some dreadful punishment. Her husband and son died, and she got separated from her children as well. Many unfortunate events happened in Charity Bowery’s life. This context means that even though it doesn’t really states that Charity Bowery is a black woman. We can still picture it by reading between the lines.
I do not like to get reminded of how dark and terrible slaves spent their pure life suffering by their cruel punishments like whipping or getting killed to stop the problem right away. Masters were so cruel. I do not understand what kind of heart God had them at birth. I wonder what thoughts masters had in mind during a torture of slaves. It was money and power that took over their minds.
To Be A Slave This book was a little but more unique than the other books that people are reading. There is no set character, place or setting. All the stories are broken up into different categories like, "The Auction Block" chapter where the stories that are gathered are about the slaves and how they were sold and taken away from their family. The places where most of the stories occur are in the south, places like Texas, Louisiana and Virginia. I think the plot or lesson that the stories are trying to get across is that slavery was an extremely horrible thing.
The reason that the slaves were treated badly could have been due to the fact that the Europeans had to pay a high price for them or just due to a lack of space. Equiano states “I was soon put down under the decks, and there I received such a salutation in my nostrils as I had never experienced in my life: so that with the loathsomeness of the stench and crying together, I became so sick and low that I was not able to eat, nor had I the least desire to taste anything.”(Edwards) As described by Equiano, the
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is a novel about an African American woman named Janie and her struggle to find true love and meaning in her life. While Janie is the main character, her Grandmother Nanny is the person who sets Janie on her life’s journey to find happiness. However, Nanny’s decisions were based on her slave ideals and were not what Janie desired for her own life. As a former slave, Nanny had been raped by her white master and gave birth to her daughter who became Janie’s mom. When the white master is sent off to war, his jealous wife threatens to whip Nanny and to sell off her baby.
Jasmine Cross His 200 Dr. Tamaka Hobbs 25 March 2013 Chapter 6 Review Question 1. The domestic slave trade and exploitation of black women affected slave families because the marriage and children and the fact that they had no legal rights, and of course no freedom. The marriages never really worked with the slaves because they were just paired together , and then children would get parted away from their families like when they were 5 or so. Also sexual abuse played a huge roll in the black women from the white southerns. 2.
By this time Africans knew that if they came to America to work they would never have freedom, so they stopped trusting Europeans. This caused the Europeans to develop new strategies for obtaining Africans to become slaves. The Europeans started hunting and trapping Africans like animals. This brutal and dehumanizing approach of obtaining more slaves is what caused slavery to be one of the worst events in American history. Europeans started viewing the African slaves as not human at all instead, they saw them as livestock.
Mary Alday 9 April 2013 History 2010 Bounded by Misfortune For two hundred years African Americans were unjustly enslaved; every man and woman was stripped of his or her identity. Each slave formed part of a much larger unit, bounded by misfortune. It has been argued whether or not a sense of community existed among the slaves in the early 1800’s in America. While some may argue that the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass does not depict this, it does portray a sense of community among the slaves. Every slave shared a sense of despair and unhappiness; they expressed their sorrow in the songs they sang.
