Christmas and birthdays are two beloved family reunions among my relatives. It may seem that these two reunions do not have a lot of in common – Christmas is religious festival, which is celebrated in terms of traditions which are characteristic for particular country and religion, in contrast birthday is rather individual anniversary, with no certain traditions and customs. It depends mostly on personal preferences and traditions in particular families. Despite their differences we can find some similarities between these two reunions. Both holidays concern giving the post cards and gifts, decorating house with colorful decorations and representing the importance of family. One of the main similarities between Christmas and birthday anniversary lies in giving the post cards and gifts. Although it is not the most essential part of both reunions, many people could not think of celebrating these festivals without them. My friend from Japan once told me that for a lot of people in her country, there is an attitude that nothing is more important than giving post cards on Christmas, New Year’s Eve and birthdays. She could imagine Christmas without carols, traditional food and its specific atmosphere as well as birthdays without birthday cake, but she could not imagine these two reunions without sending pleasant post cards. For some people giving post cards is very meaningful and often the easiest way to show their real feelings towards family members. Another similarity we can point out is that during both reunions we decorate house with beautiful, colorful decorations. Both holidays share atmosphere of joy, happiness and gratitude so to visualize their feelings people decorate their houses with a lot of ornaments.
